Positive Strokes Invites Players to a Fun Tennis Weekend

April 20, 2009 10:28 AM

Looking for love on the courts? Not the scoring kind, but the fun, happy and meaningful kind? A group called Positive Strokes, which organizes a three-day trip to Naples filled with food, drinks and plenty of tennis, can boast at least ten marriages which have come out of their organized tennis weekends. Organized by Marshall Townsend and Janet Jupiter seventeen years ago, the group now travels to Naples once a year over Memorial Day weekend and attracts die hard tennis players, ages 27-75, from Florida to California for organized match play.

“I describe our group as die-hard because we play tennis from 9 a.m. until noon, break for lunch, a swim, and then we’re back on the courts again from 5 until 8 p.m. in the evening,” said Jupiter.

The group started nearly two decades ago as a social singles mixed doubles group that played at Tropical Park in Miami for two hours every Monday night. After Hurricane Andrew blew through in 1992 and devastated Tropical Park, the duo played at different locations around Miami for years before taking the group to Naples.

“We decided to take the group to Naples over the four-day Memorial Day weekend,” said Jupiter, which at the time had forty players. “We returned to Naples every year twice a year until Hurricane Wilma trounced through [in 2005].”

After multiple hurricanes seemed to dictate the location of the group’s second tennis get-a-way during Labor Day weekend, Jupiter and Townsend capped the trip to once a year. Both busy with their daytime jobs – Marshall a postman and Jupiter a magazine publisher – the three-day tennis weekend is something they work hard to make enjoyable for all who participate.

“Our largest group was 120 and the smallest was 80 with an average age of 45,” said Jupiter. “We have a great time in Naples on and off the court.” From dinner to dancing, swimming and three full days of tennis, Positive Strokes are competitors on the court, but friends and neighbors off the court.

If you would like more information on the trip this year, scheduled May 22-25, contact Janet Jupiter at (305) 525-8265 or jjupiter@bellsouth.net or Marshall Townsend at (305) 495-5679.

“We would like to invite any die-hard tennis players or anyone looking for a “love-love” game to join us!” said Jupiter.
