Like two prizefighters coming out for the final round, Florida and the Southern Section battled right to the last hour at the Mills Redgrave in Palm Coast, Florida. The 11th annual prestigious event held October 22-24 at the European Village Player’s Tennis Club involved the best junior players from the Southern Section versus the best junior players from the Florida Section. “Not only were these the best players from the respective sections, but it was literally a who’s who of the best players in the country,” commented event organizer Andy Gladstone of USA Tennis Florida.  Five of the players on the rosters had won a gold ball in their junior career which included, Jenny Stevens, Sierra Poske, Catherine Newman, Sarah Guzick, Jarmere Jenkins, and Keri Wong.

Unfortunately, after a tiring 81 matches, Florida lost by only two matches. Even after their tough loss, the Florida players were gracious in defeat and felt the weekend was a success. Many enjoyed the camaraderie of a team event with their fellow Floridians agaisnt their Southern rivals.

Another highlight of the weekend was former Davis Cup Coach and US Open Champ Tom Gullikson speaking to the kids during some down time. The always amiable tennis ambassador developed instant rapport and discussed relevant topics such as preparing for a match and developing your game.
All in all, even in defeat, Florida counts this one as a great experience.
