On October 23, the day before Wilma devastated South Florida, the USTA-sanctioned Tennis Corporation of America Super Series matches were in full swing at the Athletic Club at Weston.  146 boys and girls participated: 10s, 12s and 14s.

Tournament director Luis Brest and tournament referee Cecil Wise said the weather cooperated long enough to play all matches but four; the club was closed Sunday afternoon for final Wilma preparation.

“From every direction players called asking about rain delays,” Wise said.  “But it seemed as if an umbrella was over the Athletic Club at Weston where great tennis was being played.”

Throughout the tournament, Wise said there was only a two minute rain delay.  Much of Sunday was sunny until the afternoon as Wilma approached.

“It seemed as if everyone was amazed we were playing tennis,” Wise said.  “That made it kind of joyful like a triumphant feeling of overcoming the elements.”

Although closed for a couple weeks, the Athletic Club At Weston has now reopened.
