When you think of the State Closed Doubles event, you may think high pressure and serious.  Once you attend the State Closed Doubles you see the atmosphere is a little different!  It is a fun event filled with socializing, laughing, but still lots of competitive tennis!

The Tournament Staff was worried about the rainy start, but the rain was short lived and left us with two extremely beautiful days that were a great setting for this fun event.

Players who entered both regular doubles and mixed doubles may have played up to six, eight-game pro sets each day.  The challenging schedule might ward off even the toughest, but this sparked the enjoyable atmosphere of the event. Players were chatting, eating, and playing games such as football in the large center grassy area, which is unused for most of our junior events.

Additionally, the T-shirt for this event was a bright tie-died shirt, which many of the players were wearing immediately.  This only enhanced the atmosphere!  Along with the fun times, the players had the opportunity to work on their doubles games and fine tune their quick volleys and reactions.

“We had an outstanding turnout," USTA Florida's Bobby Curtis said.  "This was the largest doubles event since combining with the mixed upon their move to the Florida Tennis Center five years ago.”

Bobby spoke with a pro from South Florida that said the kids he trained had an outstanding time and returned home with only positive feelings; they were maybe a little tired for Monday school!

Another novelty of the event was the inaugural “DoubsCast” – USTA Florida’s internet audio updates.  The cast was a success at the doubles event and this technology will hopefully be used at future USTA Florida events.

Players Rebecca Siegler and Spencer Newman were among those interviewed on the DoubsCast!
It was a great weekend and USTA Florida looks forward to next year’s State Closed Doubles!  Hope to see you there!!!
