ALTAMONTE SPRINGS -- Down 12-10 to the Weston Cypress Bay boys' tennis team when the final round of the FHSAA Class 4A tennis championships started Thursday morning at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Dr. Krop had a monumental task ahead.

Krop had six scheduled matches with Cypress Bay in the 4A final round Thursday and had to win five of them to steal the state championship from Cypress Bay.  Mission accomplished.

Behind an inspired effort from its players in singles and a clutch performance by its top doubles team, the Krop boys captured a second state championship in a row and third in the past four years.

''We knew it could go either way,'' said Krop's No. 1 player Ryan Kim, who won his fifth and sixth career state titles Thursday.  "We came out more focused, prepared better and we were so fired up to get it done. I knew we could count on our No. 2, 3, 4 [players]. They all came out with the fire burning in them.''

Krop scorched Cypress Bay in four consecutive singles matches to start the day.  Kim defeated Cypress Bay's No. 1 player Brennan Boyajian 6-1, 6-3. Krop No. 2 Billy Federhofer knocked off Jeffrey Morris 6-2, 6-2. No. 3 Gino Ramirez took care of Carlos Reyes 6-3, 6-1, and Mark Schanerman handled Cypress Bay No. 4 player Bradley Bryan 6-4, 6-7 and 4-1 before Bryan had to retire with cramps.

''On most of the points we were in every final,'' Cypress Bay coach Vince Grossi said. "We knocked on the door, we just couldn't have anybody answer it.''

After the singles, the boys' 4A title came down to the two doubles finals that pitted Krop against Cypress Bay in both.  In the No. 1 match, Krop's Kim and Federhofer faced Boyajian and Bryan on one court and on a court across from that match, the No. 2 doubles final took place between Krop's Ramirez and Schanerman against Cypress Bay's Morris and Reyes.

The situation was this: Krop 16, Cypress Bay 15. Krop needed to win just one match to clinch the 4A crown.  Again, Kim and Federhofer came through, wasting no time dispatching Cypress Bay's No. 1 tandem 6-1, 6-1.  The Krop girls had a first state title and the first state title for any girls sport at Krop, wrapped up Wednesday after surging to a healthy 10-6 lead over Tampa Alonso.

Even if the Lightning dropped all its matches Thursday, it still would have tied for first place.  Deon Miller, however, wanted the state title only for Krop.  Miller secured the 4A girls' title after defeating Vero Beach's Joalis Dominguez 7-5, 6-3 at the No. 3 position. The final team score was Krop 13, Tampa Alonso 9.

''It was a big relief to get that big lead Wednesday,'' said Miller, who did not drop a set all tournament and ends her high school career with her first state title. 'It was exciting to be the one to clinch it for us [Thursday]. After that it was just cheering on the boys' team.''

At No. 5 Krop's Brittany Henry also won a state title by defeating Coral Reef's Elisabet Torrents 6-0, 6-0.
