Close matches, hot weather and exceptional tennis have encapsulated the first three days of the 2007 USTA Florida Jr. State Closed Championship at the Florida Tennis Center Daytona Beach, Ormond Beach Tennis Center and Sanlando Tennis Center in Altamonte Springs.  Match play started bright and early on Saturday, June 9 for 576 top junior tennis players from all over the state of Florida.  From a four hour battle on the courts between 4th seed Kenneth Sabacinski and Philip S. Gordon in the Boys 14s, to a match that came down to a third set tiebreaker at 10:45 p.m. between 15th seed Evan Bernstein and Simon Miller in the Boys 18s, the tournament is definitely delivering what it promised.

On Saturday, June 9 at 7 p.m. three top tennis experts held a College Forum at the Florida Tennis Center for 52 players and parents.  Andy Brandi, Co-Director at Harold Solomon Tennis Academy, Elke Juul, Administer of Collegiate Competition for the USTA, and Kelly Jones, former world No. 1 doubles player, discussed topics including:

• What coaches look for in recruits
• Making yourself more marketable
• What is USTA doing for college tennis
• Foreigners in college tennis
• Online learning
• Doubles in junior tennis

On Sunday, June 10 at the Best Western in Altamonte Springs, Maria Cercone, Director of Tennis at Bardmoor Country Club, presented “Scheduling for Success” to 13 12-and-under players and parents.  Maria discussed a long term schedule for managing training and planning tournament play, all important in preparing junior tennis players for a successful future.
