Annual Leadership Camp

July 13, 2007 10:52 AM

The USTA announced that 40 youth, between the ages of 12 – 14, from throughout the United States and Puerto Rico will participate in the 2007 Tennis Leadership Camp, to be held July 17 – 23, at the University of Washington in Seattle, Wash.

The Tennis Leadership Camp was developed in 1984 to provide an educational and motivational tennis experience for National Junior Tennis League (NJTL) participants who could not otherwise afford such an opportunity. The all-expense paid weeklong camp emphasizes character and leadership development, good sportsmanship, physical fitness, proper nutrition, and other healthy attitudes.

The 40 Tennis Leadership Camp participants were chosen based upon a number of criteria including tennis ability, financial need and leadership and community involvement.  As part of the 2007 Tennis Leadership Camp, the participants will take part in a number of activities, including tennis play, the Experience Music Project, a ferry to Bainbridge Island, a tour of the Boeing Factory and a presentation by Seattle Seahawks management.

The attendees are:

“The Tennis Leadership Camp is the ideal opportunity for us to breathe life into Arthur Ashe’s mission of bettering individuals’ lives through tennis, leadership and education,” said Barry Ford, Director, Outreach & Advocacy, USTA. “These 40 youth have shown leadership potential and burgeoning tennis ability; hopefully, this camp will encourage them to further develop these skills and give them the inspiration to become agents of positive change in their community.”

The National Junior Tennis League (NJTL) is a program owned and managed by the USTA, founded in 1969 by Arthur Ashe, Charlie Pasarell and Sheridan Snyder, to provide high quality tennis and education programming to children in underserved communities.
