2008 BG 16s Intersectional Team Championships

DAY 5 - FINAL DAY

USTA Florida faced USTA Intermountain in the US Open playoff flight on the final day, July 10, of competition at the 2008 BG 16s Intersectional Team Championships in Shreveport, LA.  Florida’s boys took a 2-1 victory over Intermountain in singles with wins by Spencer Newman and Zachary Katz.  Florida’s Korey Love gave the girls their only singles win against Intermountain, yet Erin Snook’s three-set loss to Sarah Toti of Intermountain was very close.

USTA Florida picked up their game in doubles, needing only two sets each to overcome Intermountain in boy’s, girl’s and mixed doubles.  Spencer Newman and Zachary Katz def. Evan Song and Casey MacMaster 6-4; 6-3 in boy’s doubles; Mara Schmidt and Erin Snook def. Mary Anne MacFarlane and Chrissy Uriarte 7-6; 6-2 in girl’s doubles; and Gonzales Austin and Rebecca Bodine def. Matthew Cowley and Sarah Toti 7-6; 6-4 in mixed doubles.  Overall, USTA Florida overpowered USTA Intermountain and prevailed 6-3.

Congratulations to all Sections on a GREAT tournament.  The Intersectional Team Championships is about working together as a team, which is a wonderful experience for junior players who generally focus on individual match results and ranking points.  USTA Florida represented the Section extremely well and brought home a victory in the US Open flight!

DAY 4

On Day 4 of competition, USTA Florida walked away with a 7-2 win against USTA Mid-Atlantic in the US Open playoff flight at the 2008 BG 16s Intersectional Team Championships in Shreveport, LA.  Spencer Newman, Gonzales Austin and Zach McCourt won their singles matches as did Rebecca Bodine and Korey LoveMara Schmidt of Florida tried hard, but lost in two sets to Spencer Liang of Mid-Atlantic.

In the boy’s doubles, Zach McCourt and Zachary Katz of Florida, otherwise known as “Zach attack”, lost in three sets to Kevin Castellow and Quoc-Daniel Nguyen of Mid-Atlantic.  Erin Snook and Mara Schmidt of Florida redeemed victory in the girl’s doubles match, defeating Sonja Meighan and Julie Vrabel 6-3; 0-6; 1-0.  USTA Florida capped off a great day of competition by claiming the mixed doubles match.  Gonzales Austin and Korey Love of Florida def. Sarah Pariser and Justin Shane 6-3; 6-2.

DAY 3

USTA Florida faced its toughest opponent in their flight on Day 3 of competition at the Pierremont Oaks Tennis Club in Shreveport, LA.  USTA Florida took on USTA Midwest during the last day of pool play (round robin) at the 2008 BG 16s Intersectional Team ChampionshipsGonzales Austin of Florida won his singles match in two sets, defeating Joey Fritz 6-4; 7-5.   Zachary Katz of Florida pulled out a great three-set victory against Jimmy Roebker, winning 5-7; 6-3; 7-5 and giving USTA Florida an overall 2-1 victory in boy’s singles competition.  Unfortunately, No. 1 player Spencer Newman of Florida lost his match against Gregory Andrews 6-4; 2-6; 6-4, but not without a fight.

In girl’s singles, USTA Midwest swept Florida in all three matches.  Rebecca Bodine, Mara Schmidt and Erin Snook tried their best, but fell two sets to love to tough Midwest players.

The doubles competition was another exciting match-up between the two Sections.   USTA Midwest was up 4-2 after singles and extended their lead with wins in the girl’s and mixed doubles divisions.  Erin Snook and Korey Love of Florida lost in two sets to Emina Bektas and Nida Hamilton, while Zach McCourt and Rebecca Bodine of Florida fell to Gregory Andrews and Jasmine Minor in a close three-set mixed doubles match.

Zachary Katz and Gonzales Austin of Florida pulled in the only doubles win for Florida as they defeated Arren Carter and Joey Fritz in a tight three-set match.

USTA Florida plays USTA Mid-Atlantic next in a playoff between flights. 

DAY 2

USTA Florida faced USTA Caribbean on Day 2 of the 2008 BG 16s Intersectional Team Championships at the Pierremont Oaks Tennis Club in Shreveport, LA.  USTA Florida won eight out of nine matches against USTA Caribbean, sweeping the boy’s, girl’s and mixed doubles matches, along with all the boy’s singles matches in just two sets.   Congratulations to Spencer Newman, Zachary Katz and Zach McCourt who won boy’s singles, Erin Snook and Korey Love who won both girl’s singles and doubles, Spencer Newman and Zachary Katz who triumphed in boy’s doubles and Austin Gonzales and Rebecca Bodine who closed out the day with a mixed doubles win.

Florida’s only loss was in the girl’s No. 1 position, where an incredible three-set match took place between Mara Schmidt of Florida and Gabriella Vazquez-Gonzalez of the Caribbean. The final score read 4-6; 7-5; 7-6 in favor of Vazquez-Gonzalez.

USTA Florida takes on USTA Midwest in the final round of pool play.  Florida players continue to demonstrate strong team camaraderie and with coach Pierre Arnold leading the way, USTA Florida is bound to be one of the final Sections standing!

DAY 1

USTA Florida came out ahead of USTA Northern on the first day, July 6 of the 2008 BG 16s Intersectional Team Championships at the Pierremont Oaks Tennis Club in Shreveport, LA.  USTA Florida topped USTA Northern in all six singles matches, needing only one third set to finish the singles competition.  Singles matches were won by Spencer Newman, Gonzales Austin and Zachary Katz for the boys and Rebecca Bodine, Mara Schmidt and Erin Snook for the girls.

USTA Florida completed the 9-0 sweep against USTA Northern by winning all three doubles matches.  Spencer Newman and Zachary Katz def. Jack Hamburg and Eric Frueh 6-1; 6-2 in the boy's 16s doubles match while Rebecca Bodine and Mara Schmidt def. Aria Lambert and Callie Ronkowski 6-3; 6-0 in the girl's 16s doubles competition.  Closing out the final victory for USTA Florida was Zach McCourt and Kory Love who came from behind to def. Tyler Hjalmquist and Kelsey Frechette 2-6; 7-5; 1-0 in mixed doubles.

USTA Florida takes on USTA Caribbean on Day 2.  Like day one, there will be six singles and three doubles matches in Round 2 of play.  USTA Florida will then play USTA Midwest in Round 3, where the overall winner of the pool will advance to the semifinals against other USTA Sections who have won their pool.
