July 31, 2008 10:54 AM

Led by Nick Crowell, Assistant Coach of Florida State's Men’s Tennis Team, Team Florida had quite a run at the 2008 USTA Boys 18 National Team Championships at the Atkins Tennis Center in Urbana, Ill., July 26-29. Four out of eight players returned again to represent USTA Florida, including Brennan Boyajian, Joey Burkhardt, Jeffrey Morris and Luke Mojica. Rounding out the rest of Team Florida included Spencer Wolf, Billy Federhofer and Wil Spencer.

Florida defeated New England 6-1 on Day 1, sweeping all doubles matches with wins in the No. 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 singles positions. Florida went undefeated on Day 2 of competition, defeating Easter 7-0. Florida won all six singles matches and two out of three doubles matches, giving the team the maximum amount of points. As competition heighted further into the tournament, Team Florida faced Texas on Day 3. Brenan Boyajian and Joey Burkhardt (No. 1 doubles) and Billy Federhofer and Will Spencer (No. 2 doubles) partnered to defeat Texas players 8-4 and 8-0, respectively. In singles, Boyajian, Spencer, Burkhardt and Morris pulled out victories, leaving Florida with an overall 5-2 win record against Texas.

Day 4 was the Championship final which pitted last year’s champion, Southern California (SoCal), against Florida. SoCal won the doubles point, defeating Florida 2-1. In singles, Spencer and Burkhardt of Florida won their matches in the No. 2 and 3 positions, but Ryan Thacher and Kyle McMorrow of SoCal won in the No. 1 and 4 positions. The final to determine the champion, came down to the last match between SoCal's JT Sundling and Florida's Luke Mojica. Sundling prevailed in a third set tiebreak 7-6(2) to give SoCal the victory, defeating Florida 4-3. It is the third straight Team Championship win for Southern California.

Congratulations to all Florida players and coach Nick Crowell on an incredible showing at the National Team Championships. Great matches were played and you truly portrayed the definition of a team which is what the tournament is about!

The 2008 USTA Boys 18 National Team Championship is a team event featuring 15 teams, comprised of players from each of the USTA's 17 Sections. Each Section chooses players from their region to represent their Section and compete for the right to be called the USTA's top Section. Teams are entered into a Compass Draw and play a college dual match format for each match consisting of three doubles matches and six singles matches. A Section will earn one team point per singles match win and one point for winning two of three doubles matches. The first team to four points wins the match and advances to compete in the next round.
