Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) presented its annual awards this week during the 2009 PTR International Tennis Symposium.  The event, which includes 60-plus on court and classroom presentations, a tennis trade show and a $25,000 Championships held February 14-20, 2009, at Van der Meer Shipyard Racquet Club on Hilton Head Island, S.C.

Michael Kypriss, of Hollywood, Fla., was presented PTR’s Coach Verdieck High School Coach of the Year.  Since 1998, Kypriss has been the Head Boys and Girls Tennis Coach at Dr. Krop High School in Miami, where he also teaches Global Studies and American History.  This isn’t his first gig as a high school coach.  He’s been coaching since 1980, and was Head Tennis Coach at Miami Killian Senior High and coached football at Miami Norland Senior High.  Kypriss’ record is an extremely impressive 1024 wins with only 36 losses.  He has led his teams to win 13 State Championships, with 9 State Runners-up, 10 Regional and 24 District Championships.

Among his many coaching accolades, Kypriss was named National High School (NHS) National Girls Coach of the Year in 2006, and was an NHS National Coach finalist in 1997 and 2007.  USTA?Florida recognized Kypriss in 1996, as its Florida Junior Coach of the Year and he was named Florida Dairy Farmers Coach of the Year five times.  All this from a man whose career started in football as a University of Kentucky quarterback.  Michael was sidelined by a rotator cuff injury, a lucky break for many generations of high school tennis players.
