Despite persistent rains for the first two days of the event, Derrick Racine of Pensacola and doubles partner, Iain Pound of Gulf Breeze move patiently through the draw into the final round. Racine, head coach for the University of West Florida National Division II Champions won the first set 6-3. However, Pound who is head pro at The Club in Gulf Breeze fought back to force a tiebreak in the second set only to fall short 7-6 for the set and the match. These two best friends ended up playing their match in Pensacola because of rain delays in Daytona Beach over the weekend of August 6-8.

In the other final, the men’s 45’s, long time friends and foes Jeff Davis of St. Petersburg and Andres Molina of Tampa met again in the finals. Jeff had the upper hand in the first set 6-2. However, Andres was storming back in the second, but had to retire due to injury leading 3-1 in the second.

It was a weekend of great tennis despite the rain. Many players gave credit to the new hydro courts that dried quickly and allowed play to resume less than an hour after the rain stopped.
