Todd Martin Joins Field at the Oliver Group Champions Cup

February 12, 2007 04:02 PM

Todd Martin will join tennis legends John McEnroe, Jim Courier and Mats Wilander in the field that will kick-off the 2007 Outback Champions Series.  The four remaining players in the eight-man field will be announced at a later date.

Martin, 35, attained a career-high ranking of No. 4 and reached the men’s singles final at the 1994 Australian Open and the U.S. Open in 1999.  He represented the United States in Davis Cup play for nine years, helping the team to clinch the title in 1995.  Martin dropped an epic five-set match against Patrick Rafter in the Davis Cup Centennial match between the United States and Australia in Boston in 1999.  He won eight singles and five doubles titles during his professional career.  In addition to his Grand Slam final appearances, Martin is known as one of the best ambassadors that tennis has ever known, having been awarded the ATP Sportsmanship award back to back in 1993 and 1994.  He holds a lifetime record of 11-8 in Davis Cup play.

Martin finished third in overall points in the inaugural year of the Outback Champions Series in 2006, led by a first place finish in Boston.

“Todd is one of the greatest American tennis players to ever step foot on a court,” said Jim Courier, co-founder of the Outback Champions Series and a participant in The Oliver Group Champions Cup.  “We are thrilled to have him back in the field in Naples where he is a great addition to an already challenging line-up.”
