While the tournament is a Category 2 USTA National event for adults and seniors, it is also a celebration of grass-roots tennis. United States Lawn Tennis Association President Dwight Davis founded the National Public Parks Tennis Association (NPPTA) in 1923. Davis envisioned people playing tennis without a financial burden and created the NPPTC to promote the sport among “regular” players, “for whom private club privileges are not available”.

This prestigious tournament is already attracting top ranked national and world champions such as Pablo Arraya, Carlos Gomez Diaz, Andy Lake, Val Wilder, Pat Serrett, Egan Adams, and Kasey Gladding Hamaway.

Competition will be held on the 21 courts of the JETC, as well as at the George English Tennis Center and Lauderdale Tennis Club. Over 62 events will be contested including men's and women's open singles and doubles, age groups from 12 & under through 90 & over, N.T.R.P, wheelchair and family events. Efforts are being made to offer the men’s open singles champion a wildcard entry into the Qualifying Tournament of the 2008 BMW ATP Tennis Championships in Sunrise, FL.

In lieu of consolation rounds, the tennis community’s newest innovations including One-on-One Doubles and Beach Tennis will be showcased. In addition, Cardio Tennis Clinics will be offered as an early morning warm-up for players, guests and spectators.

Besides excellent competition, plans are underway for a Welcome Player Social at the July 27th Friday Night Bank of America Starlight Musical featuring Valerie Tyson; a Caribbean-themed Player Party on July 31st at the newly restored War Memorial Auditorium with a live band, delicious buffet, fashion show, and industry vendors; and a Championship Awards Luncheon on August 3rd to conclude the event.

A concierge desk will provide useful information on area attractions such as MetroZoo, IGFA Fishing Hall of Fame, Airboat Rides, nearby restaurant favorites, and much more. Five area host hotels will provide a variety of price and amenity options that will suit any budget.

Greater Ft. Lauderdale is home to many exciting area attractions, beautiful beaches, and gourmet restaurants making an ideal destination for a national tournament. The tournament staff and volunteers are seasoned professionals in hosting major tennis events.

The USTA National Open Clay Courts in May and the USTA Boys' 14 Clay Court Championships in July have been held at the JETC for the past 7 years, and the ITF World Championships were held here in 2002. The NPPTC is an ideal addition to the 2007 schedule of tournaments.

USPTA Pros & Tournament Directors Tom Krukiel and Whitney Kraft have over 40 years of tournament experience between them. At the 2006 USPTA convention, Krukiel earned the 30 years of Membership Award. He was also recently named 2005-2006 District Professional of the Year-Florida Section.
