Tennis Tournament to Benefit Humane Society

August 25, 2008 02:34 PM

TENNIS IS GOING TO THE DOGS...

AND CATS TOO!

Brochure | Registration Form

Fifteen years ago, the annual tennis tournament to benefit the Humane Society of Pinellas was started.  Attracting over 250 players last year, it is now one of the most popular charity events for players not only from the west coast of Florida, but throughout the State.  This year’s event is once again presented by Knology and scheduled for Sept. 24-Sept. 28, 2008 at the Royal Racquet Club in Clearwater.  Judy Foster, Executive Director of the Suncoast Tennis Foundation, has chaired this event for the past 15 years.  It is in memory of Shannon Morton, Judy’s daughter, who passed away at the age of 19 in November 1996.  Shannon was a passionate animal advocate who volunteered and was a part-time employee for many years at the Humane Society.  Chairing the tennis tournament is truly a labor of love for Judy.

All proceeds from the tournament directly benefit the animals at the shelter. The Humane Society provides health care, housing and lots of love for thousands of abandoned animals annually.  In our shelter, pets are treated as individuals and their fate is not determined by rigid policies.  Adoptable pets entering our adoption program remain in our care until they find a loving home.  Furthermore, we are committed to “treating the treatable and training the trainable,” giving more pets the opportunity for life in a new home.  The Humane Society receives no funding from local or state government. We rely solely on voluntary donations and bequests to maintain our vital services.

Tournament events include women’s, men’s and mixed doubles.  Entry fees are $45 per person for one event and $65 per person for two events and include a warm-up party, tournament t-shirt, tennis towel, goodie bags and awards for winners, finalists and consolation winners.  The Tournament Warm-up Party on Wednesday, Sept. 24th, will feature an outstanding dinner with food provided by Carrabbas’s Italian Grill®.  Guests are welcome for a cost of $15.00.

To enter the drawing for door prizes, players must bring an old tennis ball marked with their name.  All of the “marked” balls are unleashed on center court and retrieved by our four-legged Humane Society friends dressed in tournament T-shirts.  If a retrieved ball has your name on it, you can win some great prizes!

A Silent Auction will include rare tennis items personally autographed by top pro tennis players, top of the line tennis racquets, equipment and clothing, one-of-a-kind tennis jewelry, various gift baskets, dining certificates and more.  Tickets will be sold for a chance to win additional prizes in the Chinese Raffle.  All levels of players from age 4 to 14 can attend the special Junior Fun Night on Friday, September 26th at no charge (limited to the first 50 sign-ups).  Sponsored by Knology, this special youth event features racquet and skill games, a pizza party and lots of prizes.  The deadline to register is Saturday, Sept. 20.
