Ladies Fall Tennis Tourney Helps Komen Fight Cancer

A women’s tennis tournament in November at multiple sites around Hillsborough County will support the Susan B. Komen Foundation in fighting breast cancer – and also give the winning doubles teams countywide bragging rights.

The first annual Hillsborough County Tennis Association Komen Foundation Slam – the “HCTA Komen Slam” – will be held on consecutive Saturdays, Nov. 8 and Nov. 15, 2008.

Nov. 8 will feature double-elimination tennis at four convenient sites:  Harbour Island (Tampa), Emerald Greens (Northwest Hillsborough), Tampa Palms (New Tampa), and Buckhorn Springs (Southeast Hillsborough).  Winners will advance to the championship finals on the following Saturday, Nov. 15, at the Hillsborough Community College Tennis Complex, located just west of Raymond James Stadium.

Event organizers aim to make sure it is a fun tourney for all participants, says tournament chairman and HCTA founding board member Julie Santo.  “In consolation play, we’ll have a hit-and-giggle, mulligan format.  We’ll allow third serves, re-plays of some points, play with non-dominant hands, subbing by local pros, and other ways to make it more fun,” said Santo.

On Nov. 15, the finals for players in 3.0, 3.5, and 4.0 levels will take place.  Winners will take home an HCTA Komen Slam Champions banner and bragging rights as “County Champs” … at least until the 2009 event.

“This is the first-ever Hillsborough County championship for women’s doubles, and it is also one of many tournaments and events planned by the HCTA,” said event chairman Santo.

A luncheon and awards ceremony will be part of the festivities on Nov. 8, and HCTA and Susan G. Komen representatives will address the players, along with a breast cancer survivor as Honorary Chairperson.

The HCTA Komen Slam is a “Rally for the Cure” tournament in support of breast cancer awareness.  Begun as a grassroots golf program in 1996, the program has expanded to include tennis.  More than 1.4 million people have participated in Rally for the Cure events, and Komen has received over $38 million from Rally events to support their mission.

Each participant in the HCTA Komen Slam will receive a goody bag with Komen breast health information, an exclusive Rally pink bandana, Rally pink ribbon pin, Rally towel, Rally charm, and a one-year subscription to one of a selection of Condé Nast Publications magazines including SELF, Bon Appétit, Golf For Women, Golf Digest, Condé Nast Portfolio or Architectural Digest.

“All of us at Rally For The Cure would like to thank the Hillsborough Community Tennis Association’s commitment to the fight against breast cancer,” says Leslie Spencer, Rally senior events coordinator.  “Working together, we have made and will continue to make tremendous progress against this disease, which strikes so many of us.”

The Hillsborough County Tennis Association is a nonprofit community tennis association formed to promote and develop the sport of tennis and to serve as a collective voice for the local tennis community.  HCTA is affiliated with the USTA and USTA Florida.

The HCTA Komen Slam Championships are being organized by hard working tennis players throughout Hillsborough.  Each quadrant of Hillsborough has a three-to four-woman volunteer tournament committee, and other HCTA volunteers are also helping organize events.

Cost to enter the tournament is $40 for HCTA members.  The cost is $55 for others, who thus become HCTA members.  For more information or to register, please visit www.hcta.usta.com or contact:
