Boca Raton to Host Two Pro Circuit Events

December 11, 2008 05:06 PM

Two USTA Pro Circuit events are scheduled to make a January 2009 stop at the Swim and Racquet Center of Boca Raton.

The Champion Porsche Women's $25,000 Challenger of Boca Raton and the Champion Porsche Men's $10,000 Futures of Boca Raton will both field 32 singles players and 16 doubles teams during the 7-day Pro Circuit event scheduled for January 12- 18.

Qualifying tournaments for the men's event will run January 9 - 12 at the tennis center.  The top eight men from a field of 128 will advance to the main draw competition.  Women's qualifying matches run January 11 - 13 and feature a 64-player draw, also with the top eight players advancing to the main draw competition.

In addition to the combined $35,000 in prize money - $25,000 for women and $10,000 for men - each of the players wil be competing for coveted ATP and WTA points.

Jim Tierney, city of Boca Raton tennis centers administrator, said in past years the event has attracted professional tennis athletes from around the world and many top young U.S. players including Donald Young, Ryan Sweeting, Phillip Simmonds, Sam Querrey, Jesse Levine and Scoville Jenkins.

The USTA describes their Pro Circuit events as the pathway to the U.S. Open and tour-level competition.  James Blake, Anna Kournikova, Lisa Raymond, Andy Roddick, and Maria Sharapova all began their careers on the USTA Pro Circuit.

The 2007 and 2008 events were held at the Patch Reef Park Tennis Center. We switched to the Swim and Racquet center because the USTA wanted to give U.S. players more opportunity to play on clay courts," said Tierney who is this years’ tournament director.  This is also our first year adding the women’s event."

Title sponsor Pompano Beach-based Champion Porsche, along with Greater Boca Raton Beach and Park District, and the city are working together to make the event a success. Tierney said the details are still being worked out but the tournament will have a charitable dimension.  Plans for free clinics and pro-am events to benefit local nonprofit groups are being finalized.

The Swim & Racquet Center is located at 21626 St. Andrews Blvd. in Boca Raton. To volunteer during the events, or for more information call 561-367-7095.
