More than 90 District 12 captains and co-captains gathered at the Renaissance Vinoy Resort in St. Petersburg Saturday afternoon, June 25, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of USA League Tennis.

District 12 league coordinators, led by Local League Coordinators Carol Levin and Ruth Ann Ott, invited 100 captains and co-captains from adult fall and spring, senior, super senior, super 70’s, senior and adult mixed doubles and men’s and women’s combo leagues from 2004 and extended the invitation to new captains in 2005.

Players mingled and cajoled one another while happily celebrating USA League Tennis’s 25th birthday.  Anniversary commemorative bag tags and mints were provided to all participants.

The format included men’s, women’s and mixed doubles, short scoring, team tennis.  Players were grouped into eight teams of varying NTRP levels and competed in round-robin team play directed by Vinoy tennis director Hans Gallauer and head pro Raj Maharaj.  Following the friendly competition, 25th anniversary hats or visors and a can of Penn tennis balls were awarded the winning team.  To their surprise and delight the last place finishers received a can of balls as well. The afternoon continued with a catered buffet prepared by the Vinoy.  Centered on each table was a commemorative tumbler holding a large Penn tennis ball.  These decorations were awarded to one individual at each table.

A member of each team received a special gift from NetKnacks and there were random drawings with gifts donated from area clubs. The grand prize was a night’s stay at the Renaissance Vinoy.  Bob Pfaender with Wilson Racquet Sports provided players with demos of the latest available racquets. USA Tennis Florida and the Suncoast Tennis Foundation, District 12’s volunteer-based community tennis association, assisted in the festivities. Local League Coordinators Clark Higgs, Norm Ott, David Wisotsky and newly appointed Linda Meehan (mixed doubles) assisted in contacting invitees and rounded out the teams.  Colored wristbands identified teams as some team members were meeting for the first time and had never been on a court together.  Teams elected a “captain” who took charge of the team and set up the individual team combinations.  Four full games plus a match tiebreaker were played each round.  The timing worked well for the afternoon of competition.

The celebration ended with participants leaving the Vinoy having had a full afternoon of competitive tennis, camaraderie and fun and enthusiastically expressed their appreciation of the event made possible by Florida Section.

“I loved the format, and getting to play with a lot of different players you don’t normally see,” one captain commented. “We should do this more often. I look forward to more events like this.”  And from another captain “Please pass on to everyone involved in the planning, coordination and implementation of the 25th Anniversary Captain’s Party a GREAT BIG THANK YOU.  What an excellent day!  Everyone I talked to was quite pleased and enjoyed the entire day.  You all did a very good job of mixing up the composition of the teams in the round robin matches.  Everything was so well organized – the check in tables, the food line, the tables, the flip chart matrix for the matches, the color wristbands, etc.  Vinoy was a perfect setting for hosting the event.  Thank you.”  We are delighted our efforts paid off in total satisfaction of a much enjoyed and appreciated 25th Anniversary Commemorative event.  And now, how can we possibly top this next year?
