Lakeland, FL – In celebration of the 25th anniversary of USTA League Tennis, a captain’s appreciation party was held October 2 at the Beerman Family Tennis Center in Lakeland.

Local League Coordinators Joanne Collier, Margaret Huggins, Dee Oeters and Melody Johnson invited 70 captains from Auburndale, Winter Haven and Lakeland to enjoy a fun round-robin followed by a delicious BBQ dinner.

The event was made possible by a grant from USTA Florida.  The lady captains in attendance each received an anniversary backpack and the men received an anniversary cooler.  They each also received gift bags containing useful tennis accessories.

Chuck Collier, chairman of the Florida League’s Council, explained the new Coman tiebreak that will be used in the 2006 season, and players were able to practice it during the round-robin.

After the meal, each captain got to choose a door prize consisting of tennis towels, hats, visors, drink bottles, bags, glasses and T-shirts.  Information was given out concerning new League fees and announcements were made about upcoming leagues that will be starting in January.

Special recognition was given to Susie and Dave Beerman for the donation and preparation of the BBQ pork; Sam Good and Jeanette Dickson were recognized for their dedication as longtime USTA captains.  The captain’s role is such an important part of the success of the league system.  USTA Florida is grateful for all that they do to promote and develop the game of tennis in Florida.  THANK YOU CAPTAINS!!
