USTA Florida hosted the USA League Tennis National Eastern Regional Mixed Double Championships at the Roger Scott Tennis Center and West Florida University in Pensacola Nov. 18-20.  The approximately 400 participants comprising 41 teams came from six different USTA sections across the nation, (Midwest, Southern, New England, Mid-Atlantic, Caribbean, and Florida sections.)  Many had hoped for typical, warm Florida sunshine; they were in for quite a shock!

“Since the event was held in Florida,” USTA Florida League Coordinator Chad Daun said, “all of our friends coming from the north and even the south thought that it was going to be ‘sunny, warm Florida,’ and it turned out to be in the 30s at night, brrrr!  However, that did not stop everyone from playing tennis and having fun.”

USTA Florida is fortunate to have an active community tennis association in Pensacola – The Greater Pensacola Tennis Association, (GPTA).  Thanks to the GPTA staff, including Dick Sloan, the weekend was a great success.  There was a player social in the Seville Quarter of downtown Pensacola at Phineas Phoggs with food, giveaways and dancing!

Tournament director Carl Weathington and USTA Florida volunteers Melody Johnson and Terry Thrash were also key to the success of the event.  Johnson “held the fort” at the University of West Florida site; according to Daun, she is an event-working veteran!

Participant Edson Graham said his favorite part of the event was meeting all the teams and players from different sections.  "I especially liked the player party,” Graham said.  “The site was great along with the food and atmosphere."
