The 2007 USTA Super Sr. Section Championships took place at the Florida Tennis Center in Daytona Beach April 13-15, drawing with it over 400 tennis players over the age of 60.   Intense competition and dynamic team spirit was the name of the game during the weekend event as forty teams traveled from all over the state to vie for the title of Section Champions.  Rain or shine, the teams were on a mission, and not even hurricane force winds on the last day of competition could stop them!

Tournament director Larry Jaben felt the event was filled with great competition and wonderful staff, no unusual problems and a friendly atmosphere.

“Most of the teams I watched had a wonderful support and cheering section behind them,” said Tori Townsend, Communications Coordinator for USTA Florida.

In fact, the “Hit N’ Mrs.” 6.0 Super Sr. Women’s team from Herons Glen in Ft. Myers, jokingly nicknamed their husbands ‘boy toys’.

“Our husbands were our cheerleaders, water boys, and our greatest cheering section,” said Gloria Nelson, team captain.  “We couldn’t have won without them!”

The “Naples Grande” 8.0 Super Sr. Men’s team from Naples rallied to defeat eight other teams in their division to claim the title of 2007 Super Sr. Section Champions.  John Girvin, team captain, explained the tournament’s environment best.  He said, “This weekend was a team effort.”

Win, lose or draw, the Women’s 7.0 Super Sr. Women’s team from Treasure Coast, led by team captain Barbara McIntyre, displayed great teamwork to clinch first place, after only playing together as a team for 6 weeks.  “This team is brand new,” she said.  “We went to the tournament under little stress and ended up having an absolute blast in Daytona.”

Perhaps luck was on the side of the 6.0 Super Sr. Men’s team from Daytona Beach, as they were named Super Sr. Section Champions, sweeping the competition away and losing only one line during the entire tournament.
“This is a good group of guys who can compete and put forth the effort to win,” said Dan Cotter, who has captained teams with the USTA for over 10 years.  “This is the first time our team has advanced to Nationals, and I don’t think it has sunk in yet.”
Winners and finalists of the Super Sr. Section Champions were awarded trophies, and everyone who participated was provided with complimentary drinks and snacks throughout the entire weekend.  A total of six teams have advanced to the Super Sr. National Invitational Championships, which will take place in April 2008 (location TBD).
The USTA Florida leagues program appreciates everyone for their support and assistance in making this a tremendous event for the super seniors and they look forward to hosting their many upcoming events in 2007 at the Florida Tennis Center.
