The Ponte Vedra Inn and Club women’s 3.0 USTA adult tennis team heads to Las Vegas to play in the 2007 USTA Adult League National Championships, October 12-14 at the Darling Tennis Center.  It’s been a long and HOT road paved to victory for the women, who won their local league in Jacksonville to advance to the USTA League Adult Region Championships in Daytona Beach, July 13-15.

There are many talented USTA teams in the Jacksonville area which was on display at the regional competition.  The women competed against teams from Brevard County, Treasure Coast, Daytona Beach and Ocala.  Jacksonville trumped the competition with their accurate shots and teamwork, walking with six of the nine flights in the men’s 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5 and women’s 3.0 and 4.5 divisions.

The women’s 3.0 team, headed by team captain Kim Marshall, then proceeded to the Florida Tennis Center in Daytona Beach for the USTA League Adult Section Championships, August 10-12.

“We are fortunate to have 3 players dubbed “bull dogs” because of their tenacity on the court,” explained Marshall.  “They never give up, and they like to WIN!”

Amidst four of the top 3.0 adult women’s league teams in the Sunshine State and some of the hottest days of the summer, “the bull dogs” rose above their competition and secured first place in the 3.0 adult women’s division.  They competed against South Miami, Tallahassee, Naples, and Polk County.  The sectional win in Daytona Beach qualified them to the 2007 USTA Adult League National Championships in Las Vegas where they will represent USTA Florida, among 16 other USTA sections, in the women’s 3.0 division.

Team Captain Kim Marshall formed the Ponte Vedra women’s league team by simply emailing fellow members of Ponte Vedra Inn and Club asking, “Who wants to play more tennis?”  Seventeen members promptly responded, with 11 players competing in both the sectional and regional tournaments.  The entire team includes: Sue Burke, Anne Buzby, Joy Byers, Connie Green, Nancy Hardner, Dyan Horowitz, Debbie Jones, Kim Kalapp, Kim Marshall, Pat Moore, Maureen Mulcahy, Stacie Nicandri, Danielle Payne, Jennie Veal, Jane Wahl, Karin Wisnovsky, and Susan Wohlfeld.

“Our team is lucky to have several singles players; interestingly, many players prefer doubles,” said Marshall.  “Versatility has certainly been our strength!”

Versatility was indeed seen throughout their season, particularly during one match when their doubles team won 19-17 in an extra long tiebreak game.  Additionally, although most women don’t like to admit their age, Marshall was proud to divulge, “We have one partnership that when on court, their ages add up to 136 years!”

Versatility should help the ladies at the National Championships, and their close team ties will represent USTA Florida well.

“We’ll let you know if we bring home the trophy,” said Marshall, “otherwise, as the saying goes, ‘What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas’!”

Terrific job ladies on a GREAT season and good luck this October!
