April 30, 2008 01:08 PM

USTA Florida teams did great at the 2007 6.0/8.0 Super Sr. National Championships in Mobile, Ala., April 25-27. Competing against USTA Section teams from throughout the country, USTA Florida teams finished second, third and fifth in the Nation!

In the 6.0 women’s competition, USTA Florida finished fifth in the Nation. Representing Heron's Glen Country Club in Ft. Myers, USTA Florida finished ahead of teams from USTA Pacific Northwest, USTA Hawaii and USTA Midwest in their flight, and tied USTA Southern for first place in team wins (3), losses (1) and courts won (8). However; USTA Southern had fewer sets lost (11) than USTA Florida (12) which ultimately advanced USTA Southern to the semi-finals.

Team captain Gloria Nelson said jokingly, “Our goal was to be vertical on Sunday with no injuries.” After playing two matches a day with only seven players, and starting the tournament with three third set tie-breaks against USTA Midwest on Friday, the team’s goal suddenly seemed realistic.

“We had a great time meeting new teams and players from all over,” said Nelson. “It was definitely one of the great things to do on our 'Bucket List' – play in the Nationals.”

Team members include: Jane Argo, Paula Klimas, Marcia Taylor, Gloria Nelson, Beverly Arbizzani, Sue Doberstein and Sandra Dunham.

In the women’s 8.0 division, USTA Florida finished third in the Nation. Representing Pelican Landing in Naples, USTA Florida finished ahead of teams from USTA Mid-Atlantic, USTA Middle States, USTA Pacific Northwest in their flight, and tied USTA Southwest for first place in team wins (3), losses (1), courts won (7) and sets lost (11). The deciding tie-break came down to games lost, which USTA Florida had 96 as compared to USTA Southwest’s 112.

In the semi-finals, USTA Florida lost to eventual national champion USTA Northern California, 3-0. Rebounding in the play-offs, USTA Florida defeated USTA Hawaii 2-1 to clinch third place. Led by team captain Beverly Trucks, the ladies had an outstanding tournament and did a great job representing the USTA Florida Section.

Team members include: Rosemary Black, Beverly Trucks, Barbara Burke, Deborah Martin, Carol Dugan, Mari Martin, Barbara Bertman and Mary Albright.

The 6.0 men’s team from USTA Florida, led by team captain Dan Cotter, finished second in the Nation behind USTA Southern. Representing the Florida Tennis Center in Daytona Beach, the team was undefeated in their flight with a record of 3 wins and 0 losses, overcoming teams from USTA Southwest, USTA Hawaii and USTA Pacific Northwest. Sunday it rained so matches were moved inside for the final four and finals.  In the semi-finals, USTA Florida defeated last year’s national champion, USTA New England, 2-1 which qualified the team to the finals against USTA Southern.

Although hard fought, USTA Florida lost 2-1 to USTA Southern in the finals. “For a competitive tennis player, playing in a National Championship, for most, is a once in a lifetime opportunity,” said Cotter. “And being the second best team out of 15 is icing on the cake!”

Although tennis was the main focus while in Mobile, Cotter said the guys and their wives attended the player's dinner and dance on the USS Alabama, toured the Bellingrath Gardens and organized a wine get together – all which provided the team with a lot of great memories.

Team members include: Jack Ogden, Robert Whiting, Ralph Anderson, John David Gallant, Bob Allen, William Smith, Bruce Cotten, George Flack and Dan Cotter.
