St.Pete/Clear Celebrates its Captains

June 26, 2008 11:23 AM

USTA Florida Region League Coordinator, Ruth Ann Ott, planned a Captain’s Appreciation Party for more than 100 area league tennis captains and co-captains at the Renaissance Vinoy Resort in St. Petersburg, June 21 for fun, gifts and a delicious dinner to say “thanks” for their hard work.

Ott extended the invitation to all 2007 St. Petersburg/Clearwater captains and co-captains from adult, senior, super senior, super 70’s, mixed doubles and combo leagues, plus new 2008 league captains. A tennis round robin was planned by Vinoy tennis director Hans Gallauer, who grouped captains into eight teams of varying NTRP levels. However; due to storms in the area, tennis was rained out.

“With Combo Doubles League Coordinator ‘Stormin’ Normin’ in attendance, tennis was doomed to be stormed out,” said Ott, joking about her husband Norm’s reputation. “Even without tennis, we were extremely pleased with the 80 who gathered.”

To determine winners of the rained out tennis round robin, team names were put in a hat and drawn. Everyone on the team received a note clip when their team name was called, except the last team picked; they received a can of tennis balls.

“We always give to the winners and losers,” said Ott.

Throughout the evening, attendees were given wristbands, embroidered with a USTA logo and the word “captain”, plus USTA logoed pens and yellow tennis ball notepads. Additionally, there were random drawings of gifts donated by area tennis clubs, including a grand prize night’s stay at the Renaissance Vinoy.

“Everyone enjoyed themselves as they mingled with each other and ate dinner catered by the Vinoy,” Ott said.

A highlight of the party was when Channel 10 meteorologist, Sherry Raye, dropped by with a camera crew to remember past Channel 10 meteorologist and tennis enthusiast, Dick Fletcher. Sherry commended USTA Florida programs in the area which was aired on the local evening TV news.

Special thanks to USTA Florida and the Suncoast Tennis Foundation, a local community tennis association, who made the event possible and assisted with the festivities. Local League Coordinators Carol Levin, Clark Higgs, Norm Ott, David Wisotsky, Linda Meehan, Dave Foster and newly appointed Sandi DeLosh (mixed doubles) aided in contacting invitees and rounded out the teams.

Thank you notes received:

  • Great party!! Thanks for your efforts on the party and all season! – Jane
  • We want to thank you and USTA for the Appreciation Party. It was too bad that the weather did not agree with the plan of tennis but we loved the dinner and all the great raffles. We especially loved having CBS there and are looking forward to seeing USTA mentioned on the news and seeing the group picture of your devoted and involved Captains. It will be so nice to see all of us on TV and will make us really feel recognized. – Janie
  • Many thanks for a wonderful party! – Bill
  • All I heard were positive comments. And a couple captains said to me that the party was a great incentive to be a captain again. – Linda
  • Thank you for all the hard work you've put in to make this day happen. – Charlotte
