Butler Elem. Kids Experience 10 and Under Tennis in Santa Rosa Beach

More than 900 children were exposed to the 10 and Under Tennis format when TOPS'L Beach & Racquet Resort Director of Tennis Joe D'Aleo led classes at Butler Elementary School in Santa Rosa Beach, Fla., on Jan. 30-31, 2012.

D'Aleo was assisted by USTA Florida Emerald Coast Jr. Team Tennis Coordinator  Jessica D'Aleo, TOPS'L club staff member Mark Strohmeyer, and Ethan D'Aleo, who all taught Physical Education classes for grades K-5 using the 10 and Under Tennis format and child-scaled equipment.

"Over the course of two days, more than 900 children got the opportunity to play tennis focusing on proper grip, footwork, and eye-hand coordination," D'Aleo said. "With the weather already feeling like spring we had the chance to convert their outdoor blacktop basketball courts into six 36-foot tennis courts using the red ball and correct-size racquets."

The Butler Elementary Physical Education staff were taught the basics of tennis and utilizing the child-size racquets, different level balls and smaller nets and court sizes.

"Thanks to the help of USTA Florida we have plenty of resources to pull off an event like this so that all the kids were able to have their own racquet with some of the PE classes having up to 60 kids at one time," D'Aleo said. "All the kids had a great time being outside with a new activity instead of in the gymnasium."

D'Aleo says he is working with school employees to apply for grants for permanent 10 and Under Tennis court lines on the outdoor blacktop.

"My goal is to continue to expose as many children as possible throughout the Gulf Coast with 10 and Under Tennis," D'Aleo says. "These children are our future tennis stars in a sport of a lifetime."
