Broward Repeats, Six Teams Advance to USTA League Tennis Nationals from Florida

Twenty-four teams entered, and six exited with USTA Adult League National Championship berths over the weekend at the Florida Tennis Center during the 2010 USTA Florida Adult League 3.0/4.0/5.0 Section Tennis Championship, Aug. 20-22, 2010, in Daytona Beach, Fla. Brevard County, Broward County, Ocala, Orlando, Sarasota, and Volusia/Flagler county teams were named USTA Florida Section Championships, and will represent Florida at the USTA Adult League National Championships in Arizona and California in October.

Among the highlights from the weekend were the Broward County men's 4.0 team sweeping to a 4-0 victory in their division, becoming the only team during the weekend to successfully repeat as Florida Section champions from 2009, and the Brevard County men's 5.0 squad ending Jacksonville's three-year stranglehold on the men's 5.0 section title.

Ocala captured the women's 3.0 title, edging Brevard County, which plays out of the Kiwi Tennis Club in Satellite Beach. Both teams were tied with a 3-1 win-loss record at the end of round robin play, but Ocala won the tiebreaker with a 14-6 individual match win-loss to Brevard's 13-7. The Ocala squad, which plays out of the Fort King Tennis Center, was captained by Rachel McCaskill and included Jennifer Lynn Ochoa, K.C. Slay, Jennifer Kintzele, Cheryl Prusak, Tanya Katzen, Leigh Steinberg, Karen Counts Parko, Kandice Kerstin, Christine Godek, Hollie Powell, Courtney Deaton, Hera Peterson, Susan Eatmon, Sherri George, Ashleigh Moates Smith, and Lori Cluster.

Sarasota was the women's 4.0 champion, representing the Longwood Athletic Club. Sarasota edged the second-place Orlando team out of the Metrowest Country Club, breaking a 3-1 round robin win-loss tie by a total of only 15 sets lost to Orlando's 17. The Sarasota team is comprised of captain Cindy Wilson-Snyder, Jodi Anderson, Maria Dull, Beverly Perez, Donna Hannigan, Meg Donahue, Lorie Gianos, Lenore Funes, Elisabeth Laughlin, Tami Dalto, Lisa Meshad, Donna Lee Garriques, Vicki Dean, Julie London, and Charl Cobb.

Another Orlando team came out on the winning end of a division tie when the Orlando women's 5.0 team edged Jacksonville for a national championship berth. Both teams were tied with a 5-1 record at the end of round robin play, but Orlando was named the champion with a 14-4 individual win-loss compared to Jacksonville's 13-5. The Orlando squad's roster was captain Ligia Bottinelli, Lisa Balsera, Pamela Saffran, Anelise Battaglion Tregansin, Maura Trubman Weiner, Natalie McGill and Kerry Young.

In men's play the Volusia/Flagler county men's 3.0 team stopped the Pensacola 3.0 men out of the Roger Scott Tennis Center from a making a second consecutive trip to nationals, winning the tiebreak 10-5 to 8-7 in individual win-losses after both teams were tied with a 2-1 team win-loss record at the end of round robin play. The Volusia/Flagler men, playing out of Tomoka Oaks Country Club, are captain Michael Sanders, Dave Leonard, Alvaro Emilio Huertas, John Ufheil, Scott Fabulich, Michael Cooksey, Avri Sheldon Ben-Hamo, Mike Aylwin, Doug Wall, Phillip Arthur Hine, Tse Chung Lee, Robert Elton, and Mark Riner.

The Broward County 4.0 men successfully defended their 2009 USTA Florida Section championship, scoring a perfect 4-0 win-loss record, finishing ahead of second place Pinellas County, which plays out of the Seminole Lake Racquet Club in Seminole. Captained by Jamie Astudillo, the Broward men, out of Sunset Lakes in Miramar, include Luis Ortega, Victor Araujo, Luis Polonio, Ricky Wilson, Heidrich Vicci, Ed Wilson, Carlos Ruffo, Gunnar Rohrscheib, Cesar Eduardo Nunez, Juan Negrin, and Regulo Araujo.

Brevard County put their stamp on the men's 5.0 division, ending Jacksonville's three-year 5.0 title reign, finishing ahead of second-place South Miami-Dade (Tamiami Tennis Center) with a perfect 4-0 record in round-robin play. Playing out of the Kiwi Tennis Center in Satellite Beach, the Brevard men are comprised of captain Michael Phelipa, Ronny Gould, Kurt Pessa, Ted Dienst, Richard Boysen, and James Roesch.

USTA Florida is one of 17 USTA Sections across the U.S., and each section qualifies one team in each National Tennis Rating Program (NTRP) division (2.5 up to 5.0) for the USTA Adult League National Championships. It was the second consecutive weekend of USTA Florida League Championship play after last weekend's USTA Florida Adult League 2.5/3.5/4.5 Sectional Championship in Daytona Beach, where Broward County, Jacksonville, Ocala, Pensacola, and Sarasota advanced men's and women's teams to nationals.

The USTA League 5.0 Adult National Championship will be held Oct. 1-3, 2010, in Indian Wells, Calif., at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. The USTA League 4.0 Adult National Championship will be held Oct. 22-24, 2010, in Tucson, Ariz., at the Jim Reffkin Tennis Center. The USTA League 3.0 Adult National Championship will be held Oct. 15-17, 2010, in Tucson, Ariz., at the Jim Reffkin Tennis Center.
