Finals Set for Thursday at the USTA Florida Jr. State Closed Singles Championships

June 15, 2011 09:13 PM
2011JrStateClosedMWBelow are the Day 5 (Wednesday) results from the boys' and girls' 18, 16, and 14 divisions at the 63rd USTA Florida Jr. State Closed Singles Championships, held June 11-16, 2011, at the Florida Tennis Center in Daytona Beach where each division is down to the finals.

Palm City's Michael Rinaldi, the last unseeded player in any division, had his run ended when he retired in the second set with injury against No. 2 seed Brett Clark of Naples in the Boys' 18 semifinals.

Both semifinals in the Boys' 16s were upsets as No. 4 seed Tommy Mylnikov of Bradenton ousted No. 2 Jake Albo of Plantation, and Bradenton's No. 3 seed Ognjen Samardzic defeated No. 1 seed Joshua Wardell when the Fort Myers native retired in the third set with injury.

The seedings held true in the semifinals of the Boys' 14s and the Girls' 18s, but No. 3-seeded Caroline Daily of Sarasota shocked her way into the Girls' 16 final, toppling No. 1 seed Josie Kuhlman of Ponte Vedra Beach in straight sets.

The 16-year-old Daily a few weeks ago was the women's champion at the US Open Playoffs-Florida, and she will advance to the US Open National Playoffs tournament in August for a shot at earning a wildcard into the women's qualifying at the US Open. In the Girls' 16s final Dailey will face the No. 4 seed, Katerina Stewart of Miami.

In the Girls' 14s, No. 7 Madison Harrison of Cortez was the surprise finalist after upending No. 3 seed Gabrielle Rodriguez of Tampa. In the final she will meet No. 4-seeded Madison Bourguignon of Boynton Beach.
