11 Florida Players on 2011 ITF U.S. Super Seniors World Team

ITF-Bitsy-Grant-Cup,-Powless,-Van-Nostrand,-Hammes,-Nelson-webThe USTA announced its players who will represent the United States at the 31st International Tennis Federation (ITF) Super-Seniors World Team Championships, including 11 players from Florida, four of who will make up the entire Doris Hart Cup (Women's 80 & over) team.

The tournament will be hosted by Club Ali Bey Manavgat on Oct. 10-15, 2011, in Antalya, Turkey. The tournament is the senior tennis equivalent to the Davis Cup and Fed Cup, with the top American tennis players representing their countries in the 60, 65, 70, 75 and 80 and older age groups. The ITF Super-Seniors World Team Championships is the most coveted team event on the ITF Seniors circuit.

At this year's Super-Seniors Championships, the United States will be defending championships in six of the nine divisions: Von Cramm Cup, Britannia Cup, Bitsy Grant Cup, Alice Marble Cup, Althea Gibson Cup and Queens' Cup. The American teams finished in the top two in all nine of the divisions last year.

This year will be the first time that teams will be competing for the inaugural Doris Hart Cup for 80-and-over women competitors, named after former Grand Slam champion Doris Hart of Naples, Fla. Now 85 years old, Hart won 35 Grand Slam titles during her career, tying Louise Brough Clapp for fifth on the all-time list. Six of Hart's titles were in women's singles, 14 in women's doubles, and 15 in mixed doubles

Since the inception of the ITF Super-Seniors World Team Championships in 1981, the number of competitors taking part in the tournament has increased each year. In 1993, the ITF made the decision to divide the Seniors World Championships into two groups -- Seniors (35-55) and Super-Seniors (60-80). Following the ITF Super-Seniors World Team Championships, the World Individual Championships will take place October 16-23.
