50th Jr. Orange Bowl Tennis Names Mary Joe Fernandez Honorary Chair

Mary Joe FernandezThe Junior Orange Bowl International Tennis Championship Committee has announced that Mary Joe Fernandez will serve as the tournament’s 50th Anniversary Honorary Chair.

In 1985 at 14 years old, Fernandez became the youngest player to win a main draw match at the US Open, and subsequently turned professional in 1986 and finished 1990 ranked a career-high world No. 4 in singles.

Her career also included the 1992 Australian Open doubles title, two doubles gold medals for the U.S. (1992 and 1996), and the 1996 French Open doubles title.

She was named coach of the U.S. Fed Cup team in December of 2007, and in 2009 became the captain. She is also currently an analyst on tennis events for ESPN.

"Participating in the Junior Orange Bowl prepared me for my professional tennis career by matching me with players like [Stafanie] Graf and [Gabriela] Sabatini at 9 to 11 years old," Fernandez said. "In fact, winning the Junior Orange Bowl twice earlier, and the Orange Bowl in the 18’s is what inspired me to turn pro. The Junior Orange Bowl will always hold a special place in my heart and I am proud to be its honorary chair."

Other Junior Orange Bowl International Tennis Championship participants have included Andre Agassi, Chris Evert, Jimmy Connors, Andy Roddick, and Monica Seles among others. The tournament draws participants from 74 countries and is open to top-ranked ‘12 and under’ and ‘14 and under’ male and female players worldwide.

David Strage Memorial Jr. Super Series to Benefit Stem Cell Research

USTA FloridaSect_2cThe David Strage Memorial Super Series tennis tournament for boys and girls age 16-18 will be held on Oct. 15-17, 2011, at the South Olive Tennis Center in West Palm Beach, Fla.

The $49.95 entry fee for the charitable event goes to "Take a Stand," which raises funds for stem cell research. Entries close for the event on Monday, Oct. 10.

"Most often this event sells out so registering on time maximizes your chance to play," says tournament organizer Jennifer Jackson. "The annual event celebrates those we have lost to brain tumors, including my brother, David Strage, Monica Honowitz and Kenneth Sprague. None of these brave people went ‘quietly into the night’ but fought with every breath they had to have just one more day with their families. They are lovingly remembered through this annual event. This is our 7th annual charity event during which time we have almost raised $30,000 for charities benefiting brain tumor research and patients."

Proceeds benefit Research Is The Answer (RITA), a foundation that directly funds breast cancer research in Northeast Florida.

"In fact, all funds raised by the tournament, including your entry fees, benefit clinical breast cancer research at Mayo Clinic Jacksonville and breast care services at Baptist Medical Center Beaches," say tournament organizers. "In 13 years, The RITA Foundation has donated more than $3 million, over $551,000 of which was raised by SenioRITA."

USTA Florida will also partner with the event to offer gifts and raffle prizes.

"We are excited to partner-up with the SenioRITA this year and be a part of this cause-worthy tournament," says USTA Florida Jacksonville-area Tennis Program Coordinator Amanda Becker. "USTA players can stop by our table to claim their free USTA gift by showing a current USTA membership card and find out about upcoming 2012 USTA leagues."
