USPTA Announces Upcoming Certification Exams for Tennis Teaching Professionals

The United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) provides tennis-teaching professionals with the opportunity to earn the sport's most respected certification by participating in Certification Exams scheduled nationwide in 2011.

Upcoming Florida Exams:
April 10 -- Orlando, Fla., Lake Nona Golf & Country Club
May 14-15 -- Boca Raton, Fla., The Oaks at Boca Raton
May 1 -- Ocala, Fla., The Villages

USPTA's Certification Exam includes an on-court evaluation of tennis strokes and playing skills, stroke and grip analysis, private and group lesson instruction, and other skills needed in the tennis-teaching profession. The exam also includes a two-hour written test covering teaching, playing and business management skills, rules, club activity programming and other topics. Applicants can now opt to take the written and grip exams online after completing the on-court portions of the certification test.

The exam process also offers the Professional Tennis Coaches Academy I (formerly Certification Review Course) that covers test topics. The PTCA I can be taken at Regional Testing Centers, which offer tests every other month on the same weekends, or it can be taken online. The course is also useful to current USPTA members who wish to review specific exam areas before upgrading their certification ratings. Topics include student psychology, developing student rapport, class organization, lesson progression and a review of teaching techniques.

Contact USPTA at (800) 877-8248 or e-mail membership@uspta.org to register for an upcoming exam, or for further details. Advance registration is required. The total fee for the exam and application is $175, plus prorated USPTA membership dues.

Spring Break Collegiate One-On-One Doubles Tournaments Come to Orlando

One-On-One Doubles will be teaming with Spring Break Sports, Inc. and MG Tennis to bring the new game to college tennis in Orlando on March 13 and March 20, 2011. The tournaments, which are played in the compass draw style and to rockin' music, will be held from 5-9 p.m. at the Lake Cane Tennis Center in Orlando.

One-On-One Doubles tournaments will be offered to the 275-plus college programs coming to Orlando for the Spring Break Sports program. Ed Krass, founder of One-On-One Doubles tournaments and the College Tennis Exposure Camps, will be the tournament director. All matches are one set, no-ad scoring for 16 person draws and 4-game sets for the larger 32 person draws.

"We are really excited to work with One-On-One Doubles this year," said Paul Bellingham, director of Spring Break Sports, Inc. "We host the largest spring break tennis program in the country and seek to ensure that every team gets the most from their spring break. The addition of the One-On-One Doubles tournament -- both for players and coaches -- will be a welcome addition, as well as a great evening for the players and spectators alike."

The tournaments are open to men and women college players from all divisions. There are three divisions of play: Men, Women and Coaches. The Coaches Division is a prize money tournament open to head and assistant college coaches.

Jacksonville Debuts QuickStart Tennis Grand Prix Circuit

The first of eight Quickstart Tennis Grand Prix events will debut on Saturday, March 19, 2011, at Julington Creek Plantation in Jacksonville, Fla. The one-day event will start at 1 p.m. and last approximately two hours.

10andundertennis-logo-register-2011"These Quickstart Tennis Grand Prix events are geared toward players with little to no playing experience," said organizer Randy Jenks. "As we know, this age category is the key to our junior programs. If we can get the kids to 'play' and have fun then we will have a higher likelihood of keeping them in tennis."

The goal of the circuit is the same informal introduction to competition found in local Jacksonville Grand Prix tournaments and Florida Rookie tournaments. Courts are supervised to assist with scoring, rules, etiquette, and the child-scaled 10 and Under Tennis featuring the QuickStart play format equipment is used.

USTA 10 and Under Tennis featuring the QuickStart play format is designed for children featuring smaller court sizes, racquet sizes, foam and low-compression balls, a simple scoring system, and net heights adjusted to ease kids into the sport. Similar mini-tennis formats have long been popular in Europe, where current stars such as Roger Federer and Kim Clijsters first learned the game with age-adjusted racquets, balls and court sizes. To see a video of 10 and Under Tennis in action go to: http://10andundertennis.usta.com.

Future QuickStart Tennis Grand Prix events:
Julington Creek -- April 16, May 14, June 25
Eagle Harbor -- July 23, August 20, September 24, October 29

To register, contact the host club by Thursday, 7 p.m. prior to event. The cost for each event is $25. For more info call Randy Jenks at (904) 269-2500.
