USTA SmashZone Tennis Comes to Wal-Marts in South Florida This Week

SmashZone LogoThe United States Tennis Association's (USTA) SmashZone Mobile Tour at Florida Wal-Mart locations will visit Boynton Beach, Coconut Creek, Jupiter and Pembroke Pines this week to introduce tennis to children of all ages and abilities.

SmashZone, the premiere interactive fan experience at the US Open, is now mobile and will introduce 10 and Under Tennis to kids and adults as part of USTA's youth initiative. The mobile tour will be at 16 participating Wal-Mart stores across the state of Florida in an effort to get kids active and lead a healthy lifestyle through sports and fitness.

SmashZone Wal-Mart stops this week include:

Thursday, June 16, 2011 in Pembroke Pines, FL
Wal-mart Store #2591 -- 151 Southwest 184 Avenue, Pembroke Pines, FL 33029

Friday, June 17, 2011 in Coconut Creek, FL

Saturday, June 18, 2011 in Boynton Beach, FL

Sunday, June 19, 2011 in Jupiter, FL
Wal-mart Store #2176 -- 2144 West Indian Town Road, Jupiter, FL 33458

SmashZone is equipped with a tennis court, interactive games, prizes, and local tennis program information. Children will have the opportunity to play tennis games, such as Champion of the Court and a Target Challenge. The SmashZone is a complement to the USTA's ongoing youth participation initiative, 10 and Under Tennis.

10 and Under Tennis is part of an ongoing effort to encourage young people across the country to get active and start playing the sport. Similar to other youth sports where equipment and playing fields are scaled-to-size for kids, 10 and Under Tennis, utilizing the QuickStart Tennis play format, gives children age 10 and under the chance to achieve immediate success by playing tennis on smaller courts, using smaller and lighter racquets, and slower-moving and lower-bouncing balls.

These monumental changes to the sport make tennis more fun for kids by allowing them to learn and develop their skills in an enjoyable way, increasing the likelihood that kids will continue to play and continue to improve. The USTA Florida Section will be at all locations to provide 10 and Under Tennis program information and to get kids playing at their local tennis facilities.

KAPTA Kids Tennis Receives Helicopter Visit at BallenIsles Country Club

Kids and Police Tennis Association (KAPTA) founder and Palm Beach County Deputy Sheriff Ira Peskowitz

A high-tech Palm Beach County's Sheriff's Office (PBCSO) helicopter landed at BallenIsles Country Club in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., on June 10 as the club again lent its facilities and teaching professionals to a PBCSO program that uses the values and skills of tennis to establish an encouraging environment for children.

Equipped with Infrared, video downlink, GIS database moving maps, and a powerful 30,000,000-candle-power search light that can be flown with the aid of Night Vision Goggles, the landing by "Eagle I" marked the start of a summer camp that will run through mid August until school reopens. The camp will mentor children participating in the Kids and Police Tennis Association (KAPTA), a Palm Beach County Police Athletic League (PAL) Program, founded by Palm Beach County Deputy Sheriff Ira Peskowitz.

"We're very grateful to BallenIsles' members for their generosity in providing these kids with such a rare opportunity at its new state-of-the-art Sports Complex," Peskowitz said. "BallenIsles Country Club's member resident and world-class tennis sensation Venus Williams has been so gracious with her personal time even as she prepares for Wimbledon."

Trish Faulkner is the tennis director at BallenIsles.

"BallenIsles Tennis professionals have donated many hours to the KAPTA program throughout the season to help to teach the children for this very worthy cause and to promote the entire program," Faulkner said.

Flown by seasoned law enforcement officers who are F.A.A. licensed Commercial helicopter pilots, two Bell 407 helicopters, "Eagle I" and "Eagle II" patrol the skies over Palm Beach County providing support to PBSO as well as other federal, state and local municipal agencies.
