USTA Florida 2011 Awards Nomination Deadline Aug. 15

Don't let that special Florida tennis volunteer go unnoticed. The deadline for nominations for the 2011 USTA Florida Awards is Monday, Aug. 15.

The awards will be presented at the 2011 USTA Florida Annual Meeting and Tennis Celebration Weekend on Dec. 3-4, 2011, in Orlando.

Awards will be presented in the following categories:

SERVICE AWARDS -- Hall of Fame (Player), Merit Award (Male), Merit Award (Female), Tennis Family of the Year, Volunteer of the Year

PLAY TENNIS DIVISION AWARDS -- Bobby Curtis Junior Tournament of the Year, Junior Competitive Coach of the Year, Albert Carrington Balink Award (Junior Player of the Year), Al Mills Memorial Adult Tournament of the Year, Female Player of the Year (Adult/Senior Division), Male Player of the Year (Adult/Senior Division), Wheelchair Player of the Year (Adult/Senior/Junior), USTA League Tennis Coordinator of the Year, USTA Jr. Team Tennis League Coordinator of the Year, USTA Tennis on Campus Coordinator of the Year, USTA Tennis NJTL Chapter Leader of the Year, USTA Schools Tennis Volunteer of the Year, Community Tennis Association (CTA) Volunteer of the Year, Jimmy Gantt Memorial Award (A junior player who has overcome a physical impairment or injury), Diversity Achievement Award

Design Contest Announced for Next USTA Florida Jr. Team Tennis T-shirt

t-shirt graphicYou can choose to paint, draw, photograph, use computer design, or cover yourself in ink and roll around on a canvas, but make sure get your entry in for the USTA Florida Jr. Team Tennis T-Shirt Design Contest by the Oct. 31, 2011 deadline, to get a chance to see your creation worn by thousands of Jr. Team Tennis league players across Florida.

"If your design is seriously awesome, it will be up for the community to vote," says USTA Florida Team Tennis Coordinator Michelle Willis of the finalists that will be posted on the Facebook page of USTA Florida Jr. Team Tennis for voting. The winner, in addition to seeing their artwork worn across the state, will receive a USTA Florida "swag" prize package.

Artwork final products must be scanned/saved at high resolution (minimum 150 dpi) in jpg, gif, or png file formats. Photographing a drawing and submitting it is not recommended.

US Open Tennis 'Uglydolls' Unveil Limited-edition Characters

uglydolls-us-open-big-toeThe United States Tennis Association (USTA) and the award-winning brand Uglydoll announced today their partnership to create three limited-edition tennis-themed Uglydoll characters that will be available during this year's US Open. The characters Ox, Big Toe and Trunko will come with their own tennis-inspired narrative that will provide consumers with a unique and fun way to share their passion for tennis. The plush toy collection will be featured in three sizes. 

The popular one-of-a-kind toys will be available at US Open event retail shops beginning Aug. 23, 2011. and are now available at the legendary FAO Schwarz Fifth Avenue store.  Consumers also will be able to purchase the merchandise online at www.uglydolls.com and www.usopenshop.org

"The USTA's partnership with Uglydoll illustrates both brands' broad appeal among tennis fans and fun-loving consumers of all ages," said Paul White, USTA director of licensing. "We are pleased to be the first sports entity that Uglydoll has partnered with and look forward to offering tennis fans a fun new twist on Uglydoll characters."

The US Open, the highest-attended annual sporting event in the world, will be held in New York Aug. 29-Sept. 11, 2011 at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, Queens.

USTA 'Tennis On Campus' Fall Invitational Registration Open

Tennis on Campus Fall Invitational LogoThe USTA 'Tennis on Campus' Fall Invitational is open to the first 32 college club tennis teams that enter, this year to be held at Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center in Hilton Head, SC, on Oct. 21-23, 2011. Teams from all college campuses (including "B" teams) are encouraged to enter.

The University of Alabama took home the crown last year at the first-ever Fall Invitational in North Little Rock, Ark. The cost for the event is $175 per team, and the top two teams will receive automatic bids to the 2012 USTA Tennis On Campus National Championship.

Teams entered thus far include Duke University, University of North Carolina-Charlotte, University of South Florida and University of Tennessee.

All-Florida U.S. Girls 2nd, U.S. Boys 3rd at 2011 World Jr. Tennis Chps.

The United States girls' team was one set away from winning its fifth straight title at the 2011 World Junior Tennis Finals, but fell to Serbia 2-1 in Saturday's final to finish in second place at the 14-and-under version of Fed Cup in Prostejov, Czech Republic, on Aug. 1-6, 2011. The U.S. boys' team defeated Romania 2-1 to place third for its best finish at the 14-and-under version of Davis Cup since winning the 2008 title.

The boys' and girls' divisions each had 16 nations which were split into groups of four, with round robin play used to determine the semifinalists. Both U.S. teams qualified for the World Group Finals by winning the North/Central American & Caribbean Regional Championships in May. 

The second-seeded U.S. girls' team dominated its round robin group, winning all nine matches in pool play en route to beating New Zealand, Great Britain and the No. 8 seed Colombia by 3-0 scores. The U.S. won both singles matches to defeat No. 6 seed Slovenia in the semifinals, but lost the decisive doubles rubber in three sets in the final against Serbia.

The all-Florida U.S. World Junior Tennis girls' team was comprised of Julia O'Loughlin (Lighthouse Point, Fla.), who went 3-1 in singles for the U.S. (1-2 in doubles); Cristina Rovira (Boca Raton, Fla.) who won her only singles match and went 3-2 in doubles; and 2011 USTA Girls' 14s National Clay Court runner-up Katerina Stewart (Miami), who went undefeated in seven matches (5-0 in singles).

The top-seeded U.S. boys' team also went undefeated in round robin play, winning all nine matches against Italy, China and No. 7 seed Brazil. The team lost both singles matches to No. 4 seed Japan in the semifinals, but won the decisive doubles match on Saturday to beat No. 2 seed Romania 2-1 and secure third place. 

The boys' team was comprised of reigning AEGON International champion Stefan Kozlov (Pembroke Pines, Fla.), who went 4-2 overall (3-2 in singles); Eduardo Nava (Woodland Hills, Calif.), who went undefeated in five doubles matches; and reigning Les Petits As champion Henrik Wiersholm (Kirkland, Wash.), who went 6-1 overall (3-1 in singles).

Former U.S. junior international team members include James Blake, Jennifer Capriati, Jim Courier, Michael Chang, Lindsay Davenport, Taylor Dent, Mardy Fish, Robby Ginepri, Ashley Harkleroad, Lisa Raymond, Andy Roddick and Chanda Rubin.
