Jacksonville Out, San Diego in for 2010 Fed Cup Final

Jacksonville, Fla., and the downtown Veterans Memorial Coliseum was the only Florida bid to host the 2010 Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Final, which has been granted to the bid from the San Diego (Calif.) Sports Arena.

The Fed Cup final between the U.S. and Italy, expected to feature players Melanie Oudin and French Open winner Francesca Schiavone among the participants, will be on Nov. 6-7, 2010, and shown live on the Tennis Channel. This will mark the first time the Fed Cup Final has been played in the United States since 2000, when the U.S. won their record 17th Fed Cup title.

"We are very excited that San Diego will be hosting the 2010 Fed Cup Final," said U.S. Fed Cup Captain Mary Joe Fernandez, who has led the team to consecutive World Group Finals in her first two seasons as captain. "The area always has been supportive of women's tennis.  We look forward to playing in front of a large, enthusiastic, and patriotic crowd and hope to use the home-court advantage as we try to bring the Fed Cup title back to the U.S."

San Diego was one of 10 cities to bid for the opportunity to host the event. The Italians are in the Fed Cup Final for the fourth time in five years. The U.S. leads the overall series 9-1, but Italy defeated the U.S. 4-0 in the 2009 Fed Cup Final in Reggio Calabria, Italy. The United States leads all nations with 17 Fed Cup titles, the last coming in 2000.

Sampras, Agassi, McEnroe, Lendl to Feature in 2011 BNP Paribas Showdown

Two of the greatest rivalries in tennis will resume at Madison Square Garden in New York City when tennis legends Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi, John McEnroe and Ivan Lendl meet in the 2011 BNP Paribas Showdown, scheduled for Monday, Feb. 28, 2011.

McEnroe and Lendl will compete in a one-set 8-game pro set followed by a best-of-three-set match between Sampras and Agassi. The four all-time greats have won a combined 37 Grand Slam singles titles and 295 ATP Tour titles.

It will be the first time Sampras and Agassi share the court since a tense exchange of words during a televised exhibition earlier this March at Indian Wells.

"When Roger Federer and I played at The Garden a few years ago, it was an electric night," Sampras said. "I expect that it will be that way again when Andre and I play. It should be a lot of fun."

Tickets will officially go on sale Sept. 27, 2010, at 10 a.m. and can be purchased at the Madison Square Garden box office and all Ticketmaster outlets. For more information and an opportunity to sign up for pre-sale alerts prior to tickets going on sale, visit www.tennisshowdown.com. For VIP packages, call 1-888-753-8747.

The BNP Paribas Showdown, in partnership with the U.S. Tennis Association, will continue their efforts to grow youth participation in the sport of tennis through "Tennis Night in America," the annual national program which is among the largest-ever grassroots initiative in tennis.
