Daytona Beach’s “Team Topspin,” the 14-and-under USTA Jr. Team Tennis squad that last month advanced to nationals by winning the USTA Florida Section event, held a fundraiser on Sept. 18, 2010, at the Palm Coast Tennis Center to raise money for the October trip to Arizona.

The Flagler County-based Friends of Tennis Association hosted the fundraiser, with proceeds going to the Oct. 22-24, 2010, trip to Surprise, Ariz., to compete in the USTA Jr. Team Tennis National Championships.

"This round robin raised over $400 in total and included a feature which allowed the adults to challenge the kids to a short match," said Sharon Hepburn, program chair for Friends of Tennis. "The challenge included a payment of $5 per adult to play against the kids. Eighty dollars was raised from this chance to 'Beat the Kids.' Also, the dedication to the memory of Joyce Haynes will be followed up with a check from the committee which held a Memorial Tennis Party for Joyce Haynes in 2008. Friends of Tennis was only a conduit for getting the money to the juniors."

The fundraising event consisted of a continental breakfast before round-robin tennis with Team Topspin, then an exhibition by Team Topspin and their coach Andy Bacha.

“Team Topspin along with their coach and their families would like to thank the members of Friends of Tennis who coordinated this event and the local community who participated in the event,” said USTA Florida Tennis Program Coordinator Molly Zimmer, who also assisted in organizing the event. “They join Friends of Tennis in the dedication of this event to the memory of Flagler County’s very own Joyce Haynes, who loved tennis, loved kids, and loved bringing the two together.”

USTA Jr. Team Tennis is a co-ed format where teams compete against other teams in five events: boys’ singles, girls’ singles, boys’ doubles, girls’ doubles and mixed doubles. All teams are eligible for the USTA Florida Jr. Team Tennis Summer Championships, where the 14-and-under and 18-and-under winners in beginner, intermediate and advanced divisions qualify for the National Championships.
