Jacksonville Hosts Free Ladies USTA F.L. (Fun League) Tennis Blast This Weekend

January 24, 2011 08:48 AM
USTA Florida League Logo-webA USTA F.L. (Fun League) Tennis Blast free event for beginning ladies players will be held on Saturday, Jan. 29, 2011, from 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Jacksonville Golf & Country Club in Jacksonville, Fla.

"This is going to be a great opportunity to work on your game, learn some doubles strategy, meet new friends, and watch some great tennis," says USTA Florida Tennis Program Coordinator Amanda Becker. "And the best part is it is all free and open to any beginner player."

A morning of fun and social round robin play will include local teaching professionals assisting on court to give pointers and tips, with a "Hit for Prizes" at the end of play (prizes include: New Balance gift cards, US Open tennis towels, Jacksonville Suns gift cards, among other items), additional player gifts, lunch and more. Participating facilities as of mid-January include teaching pros and women players from Jacksonville Golf & Country Club, Eagle Harbor Country Club, Marsh Creek, Deerwood Country Club, Julington Creek, Mills Field and San Jose Country Club.

“This will also help beginner players to get a feeling of what USTA Leagues is all about, and give them information on playing in the 2.5 division for the 2011 season which will start the following week,” Becker says.

During lunch, ladies will be entertained by a mixed doubles exhibition featuring Jacksonville teaching pros Zach Ganger (San Jose), Gus Treyz (Jacksonville Golf & C.C.), Amanda Becker (former Top 100-ranked player from the College of Charleston) and Julie Weiss (former Air Force Academy player).

"We are pleased to be partnering with the USPTA and PTR professionals in Jacksonville to provide fun tennis for all those who are looking for a little exercise, camaraderie, and enjoyment of new friendships," said USTA Florida Director of Leagues Sandy Marshall. "See you on the courts January 29th, 2011."

The Ladies Play Day at the Jacksonville Golf & Country Club will be the first of three beginner/2.5-level play days in Jacksonville in 2011. The second will be held in May during National Tennis Month, featuring men and women, location to be announced, and the third in September in conjunction with the US Open.

USTA League is the country's largest recreational tennis league, helping more than 325,000 players nationwide get on the court, have a good time, and step up their game. The League is organized as competitive team match play, with teams made up of a minimum of 5-8 players depending upon division. Teams and matches are set up according to NTRP (National Tennis Rating Program) ratings, so your teammates and opponents will be at your skill level, with leagues ranging from the 2.5 beginner level up to 5.0 advanced and Open divisions. The competition is exciting, the atmosphere is social, and since players compete on teams, you have a built-in cheering section.
