Jacksonville Wins 2, Orlando in 3 Finals at USTA Florida Adult Chps.

Duval County (Jacksonville) claimed two championships while Broward County (Plantation), Marion County (Ocala), Orange/Seminole County (Oviedo) and Pinellas County (St. Petersburg) also advanced teams to the USTA League Nationals during the USTA Florida 3.0/4.0/5.0 Adult League Section Championships, held Aug. 19-21, 2011, at the Florida Tennis Center in Daytona Beach, Fla.
 
Jacksonville won both the top men's and women's NTRP (National Tennis Rating Program) 5.0 divisions, with husband-wife players Frank Vermeer on the Jacksonville Men's 5.0 team that advanced to nationals, and Trudy Vermeer on the Jacksonville Women's 5.0 team that advanced to nationals.
 
“It was a hot one, both teams played three matches,” Frank Vermeer said. “Both won the first two matches so it came down to deciding third match where the ladies beat Miami 3-0 and the guys won the decider versus the tough Naples team. Our injured captain Chris Henderson coached and hopped around on one leg. Indian Wells here we come.”
 
All three Orange/Seminole counties women's teams (Greater Orlando area) that qualified for the Florida Section Championships figured in all three of the Women's 3.0, 4.0 and 5.0 finals, claiming one championship in the Women's 3.0 division.
 
The Duval County/Jacksonville 5.0 men, playing out of the Florida Yacht Club in Jacksonville, compiled a 3-0 team win-loss record over the weekend, finishing ahead of finalists Collier County.
 
Captained by Louis Ballantyne, the team included Christopher Snoap, Alex Henderson, Darren Harper, Magnus Berglund, Joseph Reiney, Chris Henderson, Frank Vermeer, Al Dario Restrepo, Marco Turra, Charles "Billy" Curtis and Frank Bronson.
 
Broward County captured the Men's 4.0 division championship for the second straight year, edging the Volusia/Flagler counties team 3-2 in the final.
 
Playing out of the Frank Veltri Tennis Center in Plantation, the Broward County squad is captained by Jose Lopez and includes Franklyn Peart, Cesar Eduardo Nunez, Dan Falter, George Jara, Carlos Lopez, Matt Hughes, William Villalobos, Thomas Morrison, Roland Schwend, Antonio Alvarez, Elkin Diaz, Mark Rubino, Donovan Lue, Stephen Julien, Dominick Madeo, Ricky Wilson, Garrett Ruytenbeek and Victor Araujo.
 
Marion County was the champion in the Men's 3.0 division, rolling to a 4-0 win-loss in round robin play, finishing ahead of Pinellas County.
 
Playing out of the Fort King Tennis Center in Ocala, the team is captained by Greg Slay and includes Thomas Martin Romanac, Oleksandr Kovalchuk, Eduardo Damasio, Robert Andrew Villella, Michael Pera Daniels, Paul Fusco, Chris Okonkwo, Richard Velez Perrone, Dwight Landmann, Matt Sullivan, Robert John Parko and Kevin Kintzele.
 
Duval County/Jacksonville's Women's 5.0 division squad finished ahead of second-place Orange/Seminole counties, denying Orange/Seminole what would have been a second consecutive trip to nationals.
 
The Jacksonville team, captained by Mary Bush, includes Cheryl Keller, Melissa Turra, Susan Kirby, Narelle Parkes, Casey Cohen, Estela Solano, Adeline Landeweer, Tiffany Marie Oliva and Trudy Vermeer.
 
Pinellas County rolled to a 5-0 win over the Orange/Seminole counties team in the Women's 4.0 division final. Playing out of the Tennis Foundation of St. Petersburg, the team is captained by Sally Marshall and includes Katie Healy, Meredith Heineman-Van Vaals, Nancy Bahls, Tammy Trace, Allyson Hoffman, Brenda Bowman, Sandy Martin, Shelly Banks, Kathy Moll, Donna Dicus, Carolyn Davis, Marijan "MJ" Krista Lindsay, Ann Worthington, Janet Matthews and Leslie Godwin.
 
In the Women's 3.0 division final the Orange/Seminole counties ladies finally brought home the hardware, defeating the Lee/Charlotte counties squad 4-1 in the final.
 
Playing out of Riverside Park in Oviedo, the Orange/Seminole counties squad is captained by Stephanie Ann Schwartzber and includes Cindy Dewitt, Denise Turner, Terry Larson, Kim Wells, Rebecca Rae Danguy, Shanda Redding, Hye Sun Lee Dasher, Pam Sheehan, Sandra Ruark, Anne Elaine Ryan, Patricia Ann Stanforth, Mary Persampiere, Cheryl Sarnowski, Julie Saracco, Jean Ann Weaver, Janet Carbonneau, Sharon Marie Browning, Lori Weisberg and Bonnie Jackson.
 
The 2011 USTA League 3.0 Adult National Championships will take place on Oct. 21-23, 2011 at the Reffkin Tennis Center in Tucson, Ariz. The 2011 USTA League 4.0 Adult National Championships will take place on Sept. 23-25, 2011 at the Reffkin Tennis Center in Tucson, Ariz. The 2011 USTA League 5.0 Adult National Championships will take place on Sept. 23-25, 2011 at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, in Indian Wells, Calif.
