Middle School Tennis Sarasota Town Hall Meeting on Oct. 13

Sarasota County Schools and USTA Florida will host a Town Hall Meeting to present to parents, teachers and the tennis community the option for beginning a USTA Jr. Team Tennis league in the county middle schools. The meeting, open to the public, will be held on Oct. 13, 2010, from 6-8 p.m. at the School Board Complex at The Landings, Room 101.

The long-standing and popular Interscholastic Middle School Tennis League was cut from the school budget at the end of the 2009-2010 school year, and teachers, parents and other community entities have shown an interest in continuing the physical activity option for Sarasota middle school students.

Supervisor of Athletics for Sarasota County Schools Jim Clark will be present to answer questions, in addition to USTA Florida Schools Coordinator Rebecca Halpern, and USTA Florida Team Tennis Coordinator Michelle Willis.

"This is an opportunity for the community to establish a youth tennis league in Sarasota County," Clark said.

As teachers, parents and community members look for ways to continue to keep children active, the Sarasota School District has partnered with USTA Florida by allowing the use of tennis courts at all middle schools, as well as promoting the USTA Florida Jr. Team Tennis league, which is partnering with other counties and districts across Florida to bring organized tennis to middle school and elementary school students.

"Parents, teachers and community leaders with an interest in helping and seeing a community-based middle school tennis league become a reality should attend," says USTA Florida Tennis Program Coordinator for the region Susie Bessire. "Community support is needed to make this happen for the children of Sarasota County."
