The USTA national body annually recognizes facilities that encourage increasingly high standards for construction and/or renovation of tennis facilities throughout the country, and host quality USTA programs. Large and small tennis facilities, public and private, along with schools (elementary through universities) are encouraged to apply.

The USTA evaluates nominations based on:
Facility: quality of each court area and surface, quality of the court enclosure and lighting, overall layout and adaptation to site, accessories and amenities, and evidence of good/green maintenance.
Tennis Program(s): Various USTA programs, 10 and Under Tennis formats, other tennis-related programs, and important contribution to the game of tennis.

The number of recipients selected annually depends on the quality of applicants. Recipients are selected by the USTA Facility Awards Committee, a subcommittee of the Technical Committee.

Facility award categories are:
Public Courts: Small Tennis Centers 2-10 courts;
Public Courts: Large Tennis Centers 11 or more courts and/or stadiums;
Educational Institutions: colleges, universities, elementary schools, middle schools, or high schools;
Private Facilities: supporting the USTA and other growth of the game programs.
