My personal US Open Playoffs-Florida run ended on Sunday at the hands of last year's semifinalist and current Florida Gulf Coast University player Tianyu Bao (pictured), who thumped me 6-1, 6-0.
I felt like I had the mental edge trailing 0-5, because he seemed to be getting tired from hitting all those winners, but youth prevailed. The 6-foot-5 Bradenton resident's serve was like returning an overhead each time! But the fun was in the battle and it was a challenge facing that cannon.
Also on Sunday, a defending champion fell, and mixed doubles champions were crowned.
In the women's semifinals, defending champion Caroline Dailey of Sarasota was defeated 6-4, 6-0 by WTA-ranked Sandra Roma. The Swede Roma wore down Dailey, who was coming off a long semifinal, and Dailey also turned her ankle badly in the middle of the second set, limping through to a 6-0 loss in the second. In the final Roma will meet Jessica Ho, who in her semifinal defeated Kasia Osadzinska 6-0, 6-0.
Crowned champions in mixed doubles were the team of former ATP pro Ryler DeHeart and wife Megan Fudge, who beat Roma and partner Franco Mata 6-2, 7-6(5). DeHeart/Fudge now advance to represent USTA Florida at the US Open Playoffs national mixed doubles event, where they will be approximately four wins away from earning a wildcard into the main draw of the mixed doubles for the 2012 US Open.
Into the men's singles semifinals Sunday along with Bao were Miami's Eric Hechtman, DeHeart, and top-seeded Jeff Dadamo of Tampa.

Here is some bonus blogging from Sunday from guest blogger and player Megan Fudge:
Wow, what a day: Ryler and I somehow pulled off the win and won 6-2, 7-6 to get the Mixed Doubles Regional Qualifying Championship!
We started off playing really well and then got on a roller coaster ride for the second set but was able to bring it home while making the spectators sit on the edge of their seats! Thank you to everyone that came out today to watch a great day of tennis. I cannot believe we are now only 4 matches away from playing in the US Open!
We got this really cool waterproof camera which we are supposed to use to document our journey to New Haven in August which is going to be really fun....I am really hoping Ryler wins the men's singles title so I get to keep the mixed doubles camera and Ryler gets his own :) So fingers crossed!
The singles play started a little delayed due to some tropical downpours in the morning, but it was definitely worth the wait. The men's matches were all very impressive for some hard fought wins. Ryler was lucky to get a walk-over in his third round so he could rest up for the mixed doubles. It was great watching some college players taking on favorites. Jeff Dedamo had a great match against Bobby Riggs' grandson and Bao, the giant sophomore at Florida Gulf Coast showed great aggressive match play to advance to the semifinals tomorrow.
I am excited to watch Ryler play against Jeff Dedamo, Bao vs Miami Alumni Hechtman and most definitely the women's final will be a thrilling match where Jessica Ho (a local up-and-coming star) plays against the Swedish stud. So come on out to watch some outstanding tennis at McMullen Tennis Complex in Clearwater, FL!
