Cotrone Continues Roll, No. 1 Seeds Upended at USTA Florida Bobby Curtis State Tennis Chps.

June 13, 2012 10:31 AM
bobby_curtis_chps_cover_2012Unseeded Florida State University rising sophomore Dominic Cotrone continued to make his mark in the Boys' 18 division on Tuesday at the USTA Florida Bobby Curtis Junior State Championships, as the unseeded Bradenton resident upset No. 2 seed Joshua Wardell of Ft. Myers 7-6(5), 6-2. Cotrone was joined in the quarterfinals at the Florida Tennis Center by Joshua Goodman of Weston as the only unseeded players to reach the quarters. Goodman upended No. 11 seed Miles Holvoet of St. Petersburg 7-5, 6-3.

Another upset-maker in the Boys' 18s was No. 13 seed Cole Fiegel of Gainesville, who toppled No. 1 Ryan Smith of Weston 5-7, 7-5, 7-5.

"I played him in the last sectional and I lost 7-6 in the third in a three-hour match where I served for the match," Fiegel said. "It was weird because he was coming off a shoulder surgery and I had a bad shoulder as well. I learned a lot from our last match, more competing-wise than the way I was going to play. I knew what to do last time, I just made too many errors. This time I didn't. I didn't mess up when it got close."

On Wednesday morning Fiegel was scheduled to face No. 6 seed Blaine Willenborg of Miami Shores in the quarterfinals.

The Miami contingent is making themselves known in the Boys' 16s, which is down to the semifinals, and features three Miami-area players of the four semifinalists. Coral Gables No. 7 seed Alfred Perez had the biggest win on Tuesday, downing No. 1 seed Tate Allwardt from Boca Raton 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.

The Girls' 18 division also lost their top seed Tuesday when No. 7-seeded Kristin Wiley of Ft. Lauderdale defeated No. 1 Brittany Lindl of Panama City 3-6, 7-6(2), 6-1. Parkland's Mia Horvit became the only unseeded player to reach the Girls' 18 semifinals when she upended No. 9 Natalia Maynetto of Naples 6-1, 6-3.
