Tennis Grant Opportunity for Florida Elem. Schools

10andUnderPhotoGalWebThumbThe USTA, USTA Serves and Aetna Inc. are offering ICON School Grants for eligible elementary schools, with the goal of improving the health, physical activity and academic achievement of youth in at-risk communities.

Eligible schools will have grades 3-5 physical education programs that do not currently offer tennis programming in school, and have a majority non-white student population. The USTA national organization will supply tennis equipment, tennis (painted) lines, and training for teachers/coaches.

Aetna will provide the health education portion of programming while USTA Serves, the national charitable foundation of the USTA, will provide funding of $500 per year for three years, along with program evaluation and oversight.

Florida applications must be submitted by Sept. 7, 2012, to Rebecca Halpern at Halpern@florida.usta.com. Successful applicants will receive notification from USTA Serves by the end of September, and teachers/coaches school tennis training will be conducted in Fall 2012.

Florida Tech to Host USTA Campus Showdown Open Tennis Event

USTA Campus Showdown logoFlorida Tech and coach Bill Macom will host a USTA Campus Showdown event for male competitors on Aug. 25, 2012, and for female competitors on Aug. 26, on the campus in Melbourne, Fla.

USTA Campus Showdowns are fun, competitive one-day events held on college campuses that are open to all -- college and high school players, juniors, adults, league players and weekend hackers.

Singles and doubles are usually offered at the events, which give junior and college players opportunities for varied competition and a chance to see college campuses and college life. The events also help the host colleges build stronger ties between college programs and the local tennis community.

For more information on the event contact Bill Macom at bmacom@fit.edu.
