The women's USTA Florida League team from Port St. Lucie finished in third place over the weekend at the 2014 USTA League Adult 55 & Over 7.0 National Championships, held Nov. 7-9 in Surprise, Ariz.

In the 3rd/4th place playoff the Florida squad defeated the USTA Midwest Section (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) 3-0.

Earlier in the day the ladies, who played their local home matches out of Magnolia Lakes in Port St. Lucie, were edged 2-1 in the semifinals by the USTA Southern California (La Quinta) team, which went on to defeat the USTA Mid-Atlantic Section (Fairfax, Va.) in the final.

The Port St. Lucie's regular-season roster was comprised of Sandra Lee Rae (captain), Tricia Marolf, Susan Berry, Phyllis Larned, Janis Riley, Wendy Morrow, Beverley Larsen, Gina Dempsey, Shirley Gwaltney, and Elizabeth Borrelli.

Established in 1980, USTA League has grown from 13,000 participants in a few parts of the country in its first year to over 820,000 players across the nation today, making it the world's largest recreational tennis league.

USTA League was established to provide adult recreational tennis players throughout the country with the opportunity to compete against players of similar ability levels. Players participate on teams in a league format, which is administered by the USTA through its 17 Sections. The league groups players by using six National Tennis Rating Program (NTRP) levels, ranging from 2.5 (entry) to 5.0 (advanced). USTA League is open to any USTA member 18 years of age or older.
