St. Johns Middle School Tennis League Begins 3rd Season

st_johns_MS_leagueFourteen teams with more than 115 players from eight public schools will participate in the 2014 St. Johns Middle School Tennis League, which is entering its third season in March. St. Johns and St. Johns County is located just south of Jacksonville, Fla.

"I would like to see this model duplicated in other nearby counties," says Diana Gardner, USTA Florida Jr. Team Tennis league coordinator for the greater N.E. Florida area, who assists in the organization of the league. "Teams are co-ed, and the match format includes two lines of singles and two lines of doubles. The program is based on the USTA's very successful Jr. Team Tennis format where every game won counts toward the team total score."

Tennis instruction and support are provided by professional tennis teachers at private clubs or park sites near each school, and continue through the entire season. Sites include The Plantation in Ponte Vedra Beach, Mills Field, Julington Creek Plantation, Palencia Country Club, Marsh Creek Country Club and Treaty Park.

"At the end of the season the first-place team from North and South divisions will have a playoff," Gardner says. "The winning team earns the school trophy which is passed on to  the following-season winner."

Weekly matches are contested on Thursdays beginning March 13, and the league finishes in mid-May. The league is sponsored by Go Pro Tennis, which has two locations in Jacksonville, and supplies t-shirts and other resources for the league.

The league is offered through the St. Johns Middle School Athletic Association (SJMSAA) for sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students. Tennis equipment is not provided, but the league does offer student scholarships and assistance.
