Applications Open for 2012 No-Cut Tennis School Coach Award

starfishApplications will be accepted through June 29, 2012, for the USTA Starfish No-Cut Coach of the Year Award.

The Starfish Award recognizes high school tennis coaches who implement a no-cut policy for their tennis teams. These coaches serve as positive role models and make a difference by spending the extra time and effort to ensure that thousands of young players experience the fun of representing their high school tennis teams.

The winning coach will be awarded registration, travel, and lodging to the USTA Community Tennis Development Workshop. One guest ticket to the CTDW Awards dinner will also be provided (travel is not included for guest).

Eligibility requirements: coach implements a no-cut tennis team program; currently (2011-2012) registered with the USTA as a no-cut coach; currently coaching a team (not retired); coaching tennis teams for a minimum of five years.

If a coach implementing a no-cut program is not yet registered as a no-cut coach, they can do so online at www.florida.usta.com/youth_tennis/schools_tennis/?intloc=headernavsub.

Nominations can be made by anyone in a USTA Section, however, each form must be submitted by the section's schools coordinator.

For more information contact USTA Florida Schools Coordinator Rebecca Halpern at Halpern@florida.usta.com.

Hillsborough County Tennis Upcoming PlayDays; Host a PlayDay and Receive a Line Grant

10_UnderPlayDaysHillsborough County will host two tennis USTA PlayDays for children in June at Sandra Freedman Park and Tampa Tennis at Hillsborough Community College (HCC).

The Sandra Freedman Park event will be for children age 10 and under on June 23, 2012, from noon to 2 p.m. The event will feature the 10 and Under Tennis format, and includes refreshments and prizes, and information on more local play opportunities. The entry fee for the event is $20, and more information is available from Orlando at otemplejr@yahoo.com, or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/USTAFloridaRegion3.

The USTA 10 and Under Tennis format is designed for children featuring smaller court sizes, racquet sizes, foam and decompressed balls, a simple scoring system, and net heights adjusted to ease kids into the sport. Similar mini-tennis formats have long been popular in Europe, where current stars such as Roger Federer and Kim Clijsters first learned the game with age-adjusted racquets, balls and court sizes. To see a video of 10 and Under Tennis in action go to: http://10andundertennis.usta.com.

Tampa Tennis at HCC will host a Jr. PlayDay for ages 8-14 on June 30, 2012, from 10 a.m. to noon. The $15 entry fee includes tennis beverages, snacks and prizes, and information on more local play opportunities. For more information contact Ron at Ron@tampatennis.org.

Facilities hosting USTA PlayDays with the 10 and Under Tennis format of play during the months of June, July or August in 2012 will receive a choice of two sets of claycourt lines, or four sets of throw-down lines from the Hillsborough County Tennis Association (HCTA), up to an $160 value. The offer is one-time per Hillsborough County facility, and facilities must register and report their numbers to USTA online at: http://www.10andundertennis.com/organizers/play-days.

More Hillsborough County PlayDays will soon be announced for July and August.

"The HCTA would like to help you provide a professional match experience by providing claycourt lines or throw-down lines for hosting a USTA PlayDay including 10 and Under Tennis," said HCTA President Ray Harrison. "The claycourt lines are temporarily nailed down, look permanent, do not hurt the court, and take 5-10 minutes to setup. The HCTA is here to serve!"
