USTATennisOnCampus
The University of Central Florida, University of Florida and University of South Florida all qualified into the Gold Group at the 2012 USTA Tennis on Campus National Championships, and all lost by one-point heartbreakers in elimination play.

Held April 12-14, 2012, in Cary, N.C., the Tennis On Campus National Championship featured the Top 64 college and university co-ed club teams competing for bragging rights and the illustrious title of national champion.

The traditional powerhouse University of Florida Gators were shocked in the first round of play after reaching the Gold Group, following opening round robin pool play, losing 25-24 to eventual semifinalist Cal Poly. UF is the only Florida school to capture a national championship back in 2003.

The University of Central Florida, the Florida Section champion after upsetting UF in the regular-season finale in Florida, advanced to the quarterfinals, ousting annual powerhouse and 2009 national champion Duke before being edged by eventual finalist Virginia 24-23.

The University of South Florida, which gained a national berth for being the Florida regular-season points leader behind UCF and UF, also lost in the quarterfinals, edged by Southern California 23-22.

USF went on to win the playoff for 5th place.

"The University of South Florida squad had a great run, we exceeded everyone's expectations and placed higher than any other Florida university at nationals," said USF's Anila Rao. "The team placed 5th place in the entire tournament -- the best performance ever in the school's history. The Bulls qualified for the Gold Draw in the tournament despite being the lowest ranked in their pool after defeating the University of Maryland, University of California San Diego, and the Missouri Valley Sectional winner, University of Oklahoma. The win against University of California Santa Barbara in the Gold Draw allowed the Bulls to proceed to the quarterfinals."

In the 5th/6th place playoff match, USF defeated the Florida Section champion UCF team 26-22. USF's Haruka Abe was undefeated in both singles and doubles during the entire tournament.

In the final the University of California-Berkeley squad won their second title in the last three years, holding off a rally from the University of Virginia to prevail 25-23.
