Florida Tennis Briefs(2): USPTA, PTR Workshops and Exams; Hispanic Heritage Month PTR Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month with Half Off Workshops

October 4, 2013 09:44 AM
USPTA_logoProfessional Tennis Registry (PTR) is celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month, enacted in 1988 and running Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, with half off the cost of workshops for participants of Hispanic descent.

"I strongly believe in the importance of education, as well as being properly credentialed," said PTR President Jorge Andrew. "PTR is doing its part to increase the number of Hispanic tennis coaches in the United States."

In 1990, PTR created the ACE (Advancing the Commitment to Education) program to provide affordable education and certification to people of color.  In 2012, Andrew was elected president of PTR, the first Latin American to serve as president of a major tennis organization in the United States.

PTR International Director Inaki Balzola added, "This is a very important month for the Hispanic community in the U.S., and PTR is proud to support our ever growing Hispanic membership.  We are excited to be offering more workshops conducted in both English and Spanish."

Upcoming Florida USPTA Tennis Certification Exam

The United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) provides tennis-teaching professionals with the opportunity to earn certification by participating in certification exams scheduled nationwide in 2012.

The next Florida exam will be held on Oct. 14 at the Swiss Inn Tennis Center in Rockledge, Fla.

USPTA's Certification Exam includes an on-court evaluation of tennis strokes and playing skills, stroke and grip analysis, private and group lesson instruction, and other skills needed in the tennis-teaching profession. The exam also includes a two-hour written test covering teaching, playing and business management skills, rules, club activity programming and other topics. Applicants can now opt to take the written and grip exams online after completing the on-court portions of the certification test.

The exam process also offers the Professional Tennis Coaches Academy I (formerly Certification Review Course) that covers test topics. The PTCA I can be taken at Regional Testing Centers, which offer tests every other month on the same weekends, or it can be taken online. The course is also useful to current USPTA members who wish to review specific exam areas before upgrading their certification ratings. Topics include student psychology, developing student rapport, class organization, lesson progression and a review of teaching techniques.

Contact USPTA at (800) 877-8248 or e-mail membership@uspta.org to register for an upcoming exam, or for further details. Advanced registration is required. The total fee for the exam and application is $175, plus prorated USPTA membership dues.
