U.S. Fed Cup Team Draws Italy in 2014

FedCupLogoThe U.S. Fed Cup Team will open its 2014 Fed Cup campaign at home against Italy in the first round, Feb. 8-9, 2014, at a venue to be determined by the USTA after the draw was unveiled this week in Paris.
The U.S. also faced Italy in this year's first round, losing a 3-2 tie in Rimini, Italy, despite two singles victories by Varvara Lepchenko over then-world No. 8 Sara Errani and then-world No. 16 Roberta Vinci in Lepchenko's Fed Cup debut.
The U.S. also faced Italy in consecutive Fed Cup World Group finals in 2009 and 2010, both won by the Italians. Should the U.S. defeat Italy, it would either host the Czech Republic or Spain in the April 19-20 semifinals at a venue to be determined by the USTA.
The match will mark the 13th match-up between the U.S. and Italy in Fed Cup competition. Italy won the last three meetings, but the U.S. leads the overall series 9-3. The U.S. last won against Italy 5-0 in the 2003 World Group quarterfinal in Washington, D.C., behind Chanda Rubin and Meghann Shaughessy in singles, and Lisa Raymond and Alexandra Stevenson in doubles.

Tampa-area News: Time to Cheer the Local Pros

by Nancy Morgan, USTA Florida Region 3 (Sun & Nature Coast) columnist
Tennis-teaching professionals spend countless hours sharpening their teaching skills to help players achieve their individual tennis goals. Recently, pros working in Region 3 were recognized for their dedication to the game and service to players and their professional organization.
At the Professional Tennis Registry’s International Tennis Symposium held in Hilton Head, S.C., Robert Carlbo of Palm Harbor was recognized for his devotion to his students, his quest for learning and his support of the PTR. Carlbo’s exemplary pursuit of education includes currently being the only PTR professional that has completed all four certification pathways at the professional rating.
Carlbo’s teaching resume spans USTA 10 and Under Tennis programs to professional levels, and everything in between! No one too young or too old, nor too novice or too good is excluded from Carlbo’s teaching.
Jack Bailey, tennis director at Countryside Country Club in Clearwater, was selected by the USPTA Florida Board of Directors as Pinellas County’s USPTA Florida Pro of the Year. In all, 11 pros were honored around the state.
Chosen from among nearly 200 USPTA pros in Pinellas, Bailey credited fellow professionals for setting the bar high for others like him to follow. In addition to Bailey’s role as tennis director, his involvement in the USPTA resulted in his being selected to host a Cardio Tennis Training Course for both PTR and USPTA pros later this month.
"When the concept of Cardio Tennis emerged, I saw it as an obvious opportunity to merge the upward trend of cardio fitness training with the game of tennis," Bailey said. "It also brings a new, fast-paced and profitable offering to our clubs. It is my hope to get our major tennis organizations to consider Countryside Country Club for other offerings."
Bailey suggests any tennis or fitness professional interested in attending the July 20 course can register at http://cttrainingclearwaterfl.eventbrite.com.
Two other recognitions in Region 3 are Wendall Walker’s appointment as USPTA Florida District president for Pinellas and Dave Freiman for Hillsborough.
The tennis players of Region 3 congratulate these pros for their service, success and dedication!
