Tarpon Springs Family Center Launches Free USTA Kids' Tennis Club

Kids Tennis ClubsChildren at the Union Academy Family Center in Tarpon Springs, Fla., are playing tennis once a week in a free program that is a new initiative of the United States Tennis Association (USTA) -- a Kids' Tennis Club, where children enjoy tennis through supervised play and interactive games and activities.

Julie Panton, a PTR-certified tennis teaching professional, started the program in partnership with Citizens Alliance for Progress, Inc. Carmen Wilson is the program director for the Alliance.

"From the very start, the students were excited about participating, and when the parents saw them playing they decided to enroll their other students," Wilson said. "The number of students enrolled has expanded to over 30 participants."

USTA Kids' Tennis Clubs feature the right-sized racquets, smaller courts and lower-bouncing balls so kids can quickly learn to rally and have fun immediately in a non-competitive format.

"This is a great way to introduce kids to tennis and develop sport, as well as social skills in a safe, open-play setting," Wilson said.

Panton is currently recruiting volunteers for the program as it grows.

"Julie is so passionate about introducing tennis to children, and her work with the kids at the Center is proof," said USTA Florida Tennis Program Coordinator Carla Williams, who assisted Wilson and Panton with the launch of the program. "Ms. Wilson and her staff provide such great services to local school children, and to be able to add tennis as a physical activity outlet is great. Hopefully the program can grow from a Kids Tennis Club to getting kids on to their local tennis courts as a few of the kids already want to play more than just once a week."

Toys for Tots Tennis in Miramar Beach, Fla.

TOPSL_Toys_for_Tots_2012_008The 3rd annual Toys for Tots Charity Tennis Round Robin was held on Dec. 7, 2012, at TOPS'L Beach & Racquet Resort in Miramar Beach, Fla., where players donated an unwrapped toy that went to the local Emerald Coast Toys for Tots Charity Foundation.

"This is one of my favorite charity drives in order to get presents out to as many children as possible during the holiday season," said TOPS'L Director of Tennis Joe D'Aleo. "This year has been a record-breaking amount with over 175 toys donated by employees, members, and guests on vacation at TOPS'L. With the economy still tough on families in our area this is a great way to give back and put some smiles on a child's face on Christmas morning."

The event featured a doubles round robin format, and toys collected ranged from small items to mountain bikes.

"I would like to thank everyone for donating a toy this year, including the TOPS'L tennis staff that has done a great job in promoting and helping me organize the event in the hopes of touching the hearts of many families during the holiday season," D'Aleo said.
