Florida Tennis Briefs(3): Orange Bowl Champs, H.S. Coaches Clinic, More

December 10, 2012 08:16 AM
Florida Champion, R-up at Orange Bowl Tennis

Orange_bowl_logoFlorida boys earned a doubles title and a singles runner-up effort in the 18s and 16s divisions of the Orange Bowl International Tennis Championships over the weekend in Plantation, Fla.

In the Boys' 18s doubles final, Key Biscayne's Nicolas Jarry and Chile's Christian Garin defeated Lithuania's Lukas Mugevicius and Russia's Alexander Vasilenko 6-2, 7-6(3) for the title.

"Amazing," Jarry said. "We haven't lost a match playing -- us two (together) -- three tournaments in a row, so -- very happy end to the season."

The doubles title for Garin followed his Boys 18s singles title at the Eddie Herr a week ago.

In the Boys' 16 singles final, Coconut Creek's Tommy Paul, the No. 12 seed, lost 6-3, 6-4 to Russian No. 4 seed Andrey Rublev.

"Two years ago, I was absolutely crazy," said Rublev of struggling with his on-court emotions. "But now, it's better...Today was not so easy to play. Sometimes he made easy shots -- winners -- and sometimes easy mistakes, so it's tough to adapt."

In the Girls' 16s singles final, No. 8-seeded Canadian Gloria Liang topped No. 16-seeded American Chloe Michele Ouellet-Pizer 6-3, 7-5.

Fourteen-year old Ana Konjuh of Croatia won the Girls' 18 singles title, defeating the Czech Republic's Katerina Siniakova 6-3, 6-2. She joins American Lauren Davis (2010) as the only two girls to win both the Eddie Herr and Orange Bowl titles in the same year.

In the Boys' 18 final, Serbia's Laslo Djere defeated No. 12 Elias Ymer of Sweden 6-4, 6-4.

In the Girls' 18s doubles final, Americans Taylor Townsend and Gabby Andrews defeated Mexico's Victoria Rodriguez and Marcela Zacarias 6-4, 7-5. Townsend and Andrews also won the 2012 doubles titles at the US Open and Australian Open. The 16-year old Townsend will end 2012 as the International Tennis Federation's No. 1-ranked junior girl in the world, the first American girl to do so since 1982, and will turn pro beginning in 2013.
