Florida Winners in USTA Flex League National Tennis Sweepstakes

July 23, 2013 08:30 AM
Flex Leagues Logo lbThree Florida winners were named in the 2013 USTA Flex League Sweepstakes drawing for players competing in the USTA Flex Leagues Winter-Spring season registered Jan. 1-June 30.

The three winners were Duaine Hicks of Naples ($400 gift certificate to Tennis Warehouse), Joan Velez of Longwood ($300 gift certificate), and Jason Teichman of Jacksonville ($150 gift certificate).

"Winning the Tennis Warehouse gift certificate was a wonderful surprise, and not just for me as we are a tennis family," Hicks said. "My wife has played for 27 years and our 2-year-old son is already taking an interest in tennis, or 'teh-ten' in his words, so we will all enjoy shopping at Tennis Warehouse, which is my favorite place for buying tennis gear. I will also use the gift certificate for teaching equipment as I coach young people who enjoy tennis. I will be playing USTA Flex again next season for sure!"

USTA Flex Leagues allow individuals to schedule matches when and where it's most convenient -- a great program for new and returning players, and those wanting to meet new players in match competition. Local options include singles, doubles, mixed, and co-ed divisions, and players typically receive a 6-8 match schedule to be played over a two-month season.

"For me USTA Flex play is great because playing one scheduled match a week for me will never be enough, and I get to play with other players who feel the same way," Hicks added.

All registered USTA Flex League participants nationwide are automatically entered into the USTA Flex Leagues Sweepstakes drawing held twice a year (in July, for players registered between Jan.-June, and in January, for players registered between July-Dec.). Each USTA Flex Leagues Sweepstakes includes a Grand Prize award of a US Open trip for two, and several online tennis gift certificates ranging from $50-500.

"We hope these players enjoyed playing USTA Flex Leagues and that they will tell their friends about the opportunity to play more tennis -- when and where it's most convenient," said USTA Flex Leagues National Manager Marilyn Sherman. "Enjoy your prize and lots of tennis in 2013!"

Jacksonville, Fla., is currently the fourth-highest city with USTA Flex League registrations in the U.S. behind Richmond, New Orleans and Birmingham, while Collier County in Florida is No. 6, and the Orlando area No. 8.

"The Jacksonville Flex League continues to grow with the help of the participating players," said USTA Florida Flex League Tennis Organizer Jodi Pfile. "[Local tennis shop] Go Pro Tennis continues to support our league, keeping players interest in the recreational yet competitive play. Players have met new players and developed lasting friendships, and as with other adult and junior league revenue, USTA Florida gives back to the tennis community with grants and support as opposed to other leagues."
