Junior tennis squads representing the USTA Florida Section swept to titles in the 12s, 14s and 16s divisions during the USTA Zone Team Championships in late July. Each of the three squads recorded perfect 5-0 team match records during their events.

"It was the best year we ever had at the Zonals," said USTA Florida Competitive Tennis Coordinator Andy Gladstone. "Every one of our teams won, I'm happy for the kids."

Each USTA Florida Zone Team was comprised of 12 players, six boys and six girls, competing in singles, doubles and mixed doubles.

The USTA Zone Team BG12 Championships were held July 25-29, 2012, in Knoxville, Tenn. The team was led by Russell Benkaim, Dylan Breslaw, Patrick Cacciatore and Anuj Watane, who were all a perfect 10-0 win-loss during the week in singles and doubles. Other team members with outstanding win-loss records were Christian Alshon, Harry Cacciatore, Emma Decoste and Mira Gladstone.

The team was coached by Megan Fudge, who recently moved to Tuscaloosa, Ala., to be with her husband and new university assistant coach Ryler Deheart. Other USTA Sections competing in the USTA Zone Team BG12 Championships were Mid-Atlantic, Caribbean and Southern.

The USTA Zone Team BG14 Championships were held July 25-29 in Arlington, Tex. Florida's team was led by three undefeated players posting a perfect 10-0 record in singles and doubles: Laura Fabrizi, Andre Johnson, and Cheyenne Lilenthal. Other team members with outstanding win-loss records were Anna Bright, Alex del Corral, Megan Horn, Noah Makarome, Alyssa Pujals, Davey Roberts, and Stephanie Taylor.

The team was coached by Jason Gilbert of Miami. Other USTA Sections competing in the USTA Zone Team BG14 Championships were Texas, Missouri Valley, Caribbean and Southwest.

The USTA Zone Team BG16 Championships were held July 25-29 in Waco, Tex. None of the Florida 16s team members went undefeated during the week, but 9-1 records were posted by Kimbery Herrock, Alec Josepher, Daniela Nasser, and Christi Woodson. Other team members with only two losses were Jake Gabay, Stephen Madonia, and Jaclyn Switkes.

"Star Makarome also had an outstanding record," said team coach Mark Dickson. "Our team was trailing 5-1 after the doubles, then won nine out of 12 singles matches. It was an adrenaline-pumping come-from-behind win. The team also had numerous comeback wins after losing the first set. The Sportsmanship Award winners for Team Florida were Stephen Madonia and Star Makarome."

Dickson is the Assistant Coach at University of Miami. Other USTA Sections competing in the USTA Zone Team BG16 Championships were Texas, Pacific Northwest and Northern.
